171 Avenue A has been vacant for several years now... The space almost became home to a fishmonger and a bagel shop this year...
Anyway, the place seems to have been spruced up a little of late...
And one persistent rumor: This space may become home to a Five Guys Burgers, the Virginia-based chain with a handful of locations in Manhattan.
Never had one myself, but people I know love these guys....
Hey Grieve just went to the new 5 Guys on 34th Street Friday. It was an insane mad house. It's fast food. Was it good? I guess. But a burger and fries was $10.68. So not *that* good.
ReplyDelete171 is below my apt and we just don't need that on our street. If you want a great burger, hit Paul's on 2nd Ave!
Ugh can't someone find a good business to open for poor ol' 171?
no! no! no! no!
ReplyDeletethere's nothing fratboys love more than a quality burger chain!
Wait, what happened to the Bagel joint? 5G is great, awesome burgers, awesome fries. There are just so many burger joints around us, a bagel joint would be welcome, I thought. Or a Fishmonger, for that matter.
ReplyDeleteHey 19 -- Tompkins Square Bagels will be in 165 Avenue A now.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what's opening in the old Raven space on the corner of 12th and A? They've been building up a storm in the space.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried the Five Guys burger because they don't serve beer. A burger without a beer? Insanity.
ReplyDelete@ anon 10:53 Yeah, there has been a lot of progress there of late. I want to find out. Definitely looks like a bar/restaurant... Work crews are always done for the day when I walk by...
ReplyDeleteI like Five Guys - good burgers, hot dogs and cajun fries. I've only been to the one on La Guardia, which can get busy at lunch time, but I've never seen it out of hand.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me wonder...how many guys does it take to make a burger? Just saying.
ReplyDeleteCome on people Five Guys is probably the best non-pretentious burger in the city. Terrific fries too. I can't wait!!!
ReplyDeletejeez not only is it another restaurant but a chain? that seriously blows. boo.
ReplyDeleteI would invite anyone to go to the 34th St location during lunch rush and tell me that's not a sweatshop.
ReplyDeleteThe manager in the kitchen was screaming "Let's go guys, LET'S GO!!!" at the cooks every 30-60 seconds. That is not an exaggeration. I felt like Chairman Mao was hovering nearby.
To tell you the truth Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchise is a fast food burger joint stylized in red and white. They serve burgers, franks, fries, soda, water. They serve no alcohol and are open seven days a week from 11 to 10, and it appears from photos that they do not have outdoor seating, in the front at least. This is the type of place that you either eat and leave, or take out. Restaurants like this come and go while others like Westville continue to leave their mark with their audacious display of arrogance.
ReplyDeleteThe Westville Yuppies and or tourists hang out there all fucking day! They have co opted the entire corner.
I'm whole heartedly for Five Guys Burgers and Fries!
The 34th street crowd is like a mosh pit at a rave. Alphabet City is primarily residential.
