ReplyDeleteBTW, Dunkin Donuts has some of the worst donuts in NY. I'll even rate coffee cart donuts as FAR superior to DD. DD's have a greasy aftertaste. My favorites used to be at The Donut Pub on 14th & 7th.
My work is never done.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I've never had anything from DD except their coffee, which is just fine. For lack of a better term at 9:15 am on a Friday, these sausage pancake things seem like good stoner food.

The Donut Pub is awesome. I used to go there all the time when I lived over there.
ReplyDeleteObviously Donut Plant is fantastic as well, but the last few times I've walked by there have been huge lines.
OMG first it was the throw up on a bagel aka tuna sandwich ads on the M-14 that made me want to hurl and now this! I feel like they need a second opinion on these ads!
ReplyDeleteLet me second the notion BTW that while DD DOES have the worst donuts, their coffee IS excellent, but here's the rub... The donuts get made in a central bakery and delivered, hence their universal suckiness but the coffee (which is of very good quality) is made fresh, and if the franchise employees don't know what they're doing, they can screw it up. I grew up in the coffee business.
ReplyDeleteYeah, If I need a coffee, and DD is all available, their coffee is OK; and I'll handle an "Old Fashioned" from them (but certainly no other donut).
ReplyDeleteUsed to love Donut Pub when walking home after late night shift on a cold winter night. Continuing my stroll with a coffee and a donut in the quite night.
DD is disgusting, but where can I get one of those old-fashioned jelly doughnuts, with the nice thick dark-red raspberry jelly and the crunchy granulated sugar (not the powdered white stuff) on the outside? I haven't seen any around for ages...

ReplyDeleteThe bakery on Ave B between 13 & 14 has those, but they're greasy as hell. Donut Pub on 14th and 7th definitely used to sell them, that used to be a regular stop on my way to work on the 1 train, but I haven't been in there for years.
Donut Pub is great, I go there when I am in that area, right at the bus stop. Their jelly donuts are excellent, very traditional, just what you'd expect. Their Boston Cream is delicious too. The chocolate dipped is yummy. I could go on.
ReplyDeleteDoughnut Plant is far superior to any donut bakery, or to any other food you would ever put in your mouth, ever, but long lines and not in a very convenient location (for me) and kind of spendy too. Hint: you must only get the small round donuts here, not the big square ones. This is a very important difference. Memorize, repeat and chant.
The donut pub is great! I live nearby and stop in about once a week. I like the fact that there's a counter in there that you can sit down at. There's a DD about three doors down and I always want to go in there and scream, "WHY?" to the customers.
ReplyDeleteHippieChick - Neptune on 1st Ave. has the old-fashioned jelly donuts you're looking for. Melted sugar dripped on top so it re-glazes all crunchy. Jill, thanks for the tip - every time I went to Doughnut Plant I got one of the square ones, every time they tasted like old cardboard, and I could not figure what all the fuss was about. Now I know what to do!
