Reader report: Attempted ATM holdup on Avenue A doesn't go so well for would-be thief

A reader notes that there was an attempted robbery last evening (some time around 8:30 p.m. or so) at the Chase branch on Avenue A at Second Street. As the story goes, a woman, the intended victim, "beat the shit out of the guy and he left on a stretcher in handcuffs." There was also a very strong police response.

Anyone else have any information?

    Ha! Thats awesome. I love that it was a woman also. I hope I would have the guts to do the same as her.

    A couple of weeks ago, my friend [Tony] went there to take out some cash. On his way to my place from the chase branch, he noticed a ton of withdrawal notifications on his phone. It amounted to somewhere around $800 taken out within 15 minutes. He realized that there must be somebody watching people enter in their information, or perhaps he left the screen before it all exited out. So after another notification of money being withdrawn, he went back to the bank and noticed this guy standing out there. Tony asked the guy, "How long have you been standing out here?" The shady guy said, "About 15 minutes why?" Tony: "Oh I was just wondering because somehow a ton of money was taken out of my account all of a sudden." That time period was about the same time when Tony initially first left the ATM. The shady guy quickly reached for his phone and immediately said, "Hey, I'm at the chase branch." He started to walk away, Tony started following him and the guy started to get anxious saying, "Why are you following me? I'm going to punch you!" Tony didn't want to start anything but just wanted the guy to stick around and wait there for help from the police. The guy didn't like that and came to Tony, stepped on his foot got into his face and clinched his fist. He quickly backed off and that was it. He spent 30 minutes trying to find a cop but no luck. Because hey, when you need the police, they're never there for you.

    So the problem with this exact branch is the fact that people can see directly into the ATM area. There aren't any partitions or ways of blocking the outsiders peering in and watching your actions. So when you go to the 2nd St. Ave A branch, remember that.
