Speaking of First Street... somehow, this three-bedroom apartment at 38 E. First St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue escaped my expensive home radar... It first hit the market in September... and it remains on the market for $30,000 a month...
I'm trying to figure out if this is the most expensive monthly rental ever in the neighborhood... If you have any info to support this, please let me know...
Uh, anyway, what exactly do you get for that kind of money every month?

Look at the floorplan — it comes with your very own ballroom....
And the rest of the place...
and just what are: Dryer designer "wnd" treatments?
ReplyDeletewell i don't know, i think the parquet floor in the ball room kinda ruins the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSomeone forgot the comma after "dryer"; should be "dryer, designer window treatments".
ReplyDeleteThis place sounds ultra-tacky, nothing else.
that comma will cost an extra $5,000 a month in the rent
ReplyDeleteYou know, cuz, sometimes even the sultan of brunei likes to slum it downtown-style.
ReplyDelete@esquared and anonymous 12:27 - both of your comments made me laugh out loud. Thanks!
ReplyDelete@Lisa Me too!
ReplyDelete"this XXX mint, elegant home features 16 foot ceilings, corinthian columns"
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell does that mean? The only time I want to see XXX is on porn and a can of Ballantine Ale! Plus the word "Corinthian" should only be reserved for describing the fine, rich leather of a Cordoba. Let's have a little respect for Ricardo Montalbán, people!
Is this in that converted school? Hmm, well, this block is absolutely awful at night...
ReplyDeleteYa know what people want to see when the walk out the door of a $30K apartment? Central Park. It's gonna be really tough for this place to stay rented for very long when the folks realize they're in a tenement neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteNo bathroom at the south end? That's a 30k fail.
ReplyDeleteThere is an apartment in the glass building on astor that is also being rented for 30k a month.
ReplyDeleteYou've got to have some serious commitment issues if you'd spend that much on an apartment instead of a home.
ReplyDeleteWell! I used to live on this block, in a toilet-in-the-(gilt-free)hallway studio, 25 years ago. My first apartment in New York, coming from England, & even though a toilet-in-the-apartment would have been better, I've never loved any subsequent place as much, Guess I'll never be sufficiently aspirational.
ReplyDeletefirst street 1-2 is getting to be a rather glitzy street, the avalon, whole foods, trendy stores and restaurants.
ReplyDeleteand when houston street is "redone" and green, it will continue "the corridor" that now starts on broadway heading east.
you can now buy a $1,500 jacket on the bowery.
i preferred the Dryer designer wnd treatments - sounded more lower east side and more exotic.
Sorta reminds me of my 4th floor walkup on 4th and Ave D when I was a child.
ReplyDeleteThat place must be freezing in the winter!
ReplyDeleteI see no sources of heat (maybe from the vents in the ceiling?) in those photos.
With those high ceilings and huge, open rooms with no doors between areas, fuhgeddaboudit.
Wow, this $30K apt is directly across from my old building, which puts it within spitting distance of the most terrifying posse of rats that I have ever seen. Surely if you can afford $30/K month for rent you'll have someone scope out the area to ensure that you won't be confronted with rodents of unusual size every time you walk out the door?
ReplyDeleteOh Rat Lot....such fond memories....
