Breaking: 11th Street shut down; some sort of 'nasty-smelling smoke'

Thanks to EV Grieve reader Patrick for the photo and info:

"They've shut down 11th btw 1st and 2nd aves. Some sort of nasty-smelling smoke coming from a grate/manhole. They've got con-ed emergency crews on the block."

  1. it's either an early b&t[er] showered in axe has fallen in that manhole, or, since east village is running out of space on the streets for yet another hookah joint, one opened down there

  2. When I left for work this morning at 8:30, I walked on that block and saw the smoke (it looked more like steam to me). I didn't notice any smell. FDNY were already there accessing what it was. For the sake of the people living on that block, I hope it's nothing serious.

  3. wonder if this has anything to do with the constant steam leak from con edison on 11th street 1-A.
it's been going on for over a year.
the steam has already killed one tree and is on the way to killing another one, perhaps two (in its plume).
local councilmember and cb#3 have been notified numerous times.
in june (2010) con edison set up a planning committee with no chair and no information).
then there was that burst of steam on first avenue 10-11 posted on ev grieve late last year.
