ReplyDelete@Anon 10:27 - Here's a site where you can read a history of that great old bank building; it housed some artist studios in the early 1980s then was converted to residential about 20 years ago.

ReplyDeleteYeah-- it LOOKS like a dump because it WAS! I lived at 186 Norfolk (@ Houston) between 1982-1985. In all that time, I NEVER dared walk further south in Norfolk than #186, or further East on Houston. Fellow tenants in my building would throw trash down the air shaft, vomit down said-air shaft, break into my mailbox, pee in the halls, kill stray cats just for the fun of it. (And, this was all within the relative safety of my building!) The LES was a hell-hole, plain and simple.
ReplyDeletei remember driving over there, venturing from the safety of Macdougal, holy cow! You gotta read Luc Sante's account of his time living there in the 70s...remarkable...a war zone...now it's a cupcake fatality.
ReplyDeleteJust wanna point out that Lisa 1/29 @ 1:26 PM is not the same Lisa on 1/28 @ 10:40 and 11:04, I've lived on 11th between A and B since 1980 and have no connection to this new LES Lisa! (Gonna be confusing if she continues to post...)
ReplyDeleteYou should have seen that neighborhood without the snow. I've lived on 8th between C&D since 1991. Some of the pictures was across the street from me.
ReplyDeleteIn the early 1990s, Tompkins Square Park was closed, driving the homeless community out. They set up a shanty town across the street in that huge vacant lot. There were drugs and prostitution. The Social Club in my building supplied some of the drugs.
When we were evicting the Social Club for that and several other reasons their legal answer was that the Irish and Jewish co-op Board's names on the complaint were explanation for the eviction. They said that their Social Club was a legitimate expression of Caribbean culture. That did not convince the judge, fortunately.
The only thing I miss from that era was the lower fence around Tompkins Square Park.
I have some pictures of this same area, including a couple of Puerto Rican influenced community gardens which are beautiful all year round. They were taken 1/27/11 after the snow fall.

Ah, my old stomping grounds. There was a club there called 8BC. That whole area had large stretches that were just deserted. I lived there from 80 to 90
