My annual excuse for posting photos of people in their underwear

Today was the annual No Pants Subway Ride... which is why so many people asked me why folks were walking around the East Village tonight in parkas, hats, scarves and... underwear... here are some scenes from today at Union Square taken by Constantino Diaz-Duran, who gave me the OK to post these... You may find more photos via his Twitter account here.

  1. To my surprise, I am not horrified. These people look pretty damn good in their underwear.

  3. If you think these people look "damn good" then you must be like 80 years old. What I see is passable at best. Saggy and mediocre is more like it. The asian girl has decent booty, but then again she and her companion look like boring douches, desperate to be a part of something fun.

That's what this whole thing is really. We all can understand the impulse to want to get out mingle and have fun but this is a little pitiful. I mean, midwestern bowling leagues have a better grasp of what it means to do activity and enjoy one's self. IMO the hipster culture really shackles itself. They are not good at enjoying themselves. I've been around this "event", or the Santa Claus bar crawl and beneath the thin veneer of mirth and bonhomie its not hard to see the emptiness/misery in these participants' eyes. It's a simulacrum of a good time.

  4. At least they were doing it for an event. People need to get the message across to the fashionista gals that semi-sheer pantyhose are NOT PANTS. Leggings aren't pants either but at least they're opaque. I don't want to see the control top thigh thing!

  5. To anon who wrote, "If you think these people look 'damn good'...": The way people look is but a single aspect of their entire lives. What you or other people think of the size and shape of their asses is hopefully the most minor of their daily thoughts.

I agree with you that people who participate in these internet events seem desperate to find community or connection and don't seem to know how to have fun.

  6. Hey Stephanie,
A friend told me she was doing this and so on impulse I decided to go debag myself. I loved the whole idea of it, but it seems it may be past its sell-by date: too many people on the subway saying "oh, it's no pants day then" and by the time the hoards exploded into Union Square it was all conga lines and chants of "No Pants, No Pants". But I had fun despite that and the cold.
I'm glad I stubbled upon your blog though. The woman in the pink hat on the 3rd picture down is an ex girlfriend of mine and she looks like she misses me terribly.
    John
