A cab ride up First Avenue in 1971
This video is marked "NYC Taxi Ride up 2nd Ave circa 1971" though it's actually First Avenue... a nice stroll through the East Village... see what you can recognize....
Cool--I saw an EL D--contender for Best Car Ever--and the Reingold truck is priceless--no hipsters nor hippies as yet in 1971. The school--the bank look pretty much the same. I remember riding in cabs and feeling pretty special on route. Great black and white. A good friend of mine learned to drive while being a passenger in so many taxis--he learned the "taxi technique".
This First Avenue ride from 1971 reminded me of my youth in both Manhattan and the Bronx; hard to believe I was only 8 when this footage was shot! :-) Thanks for sharing this!
I used to eat "Blimpy's Best" sandwiches at that Blimpy's on the corner of 14th when I was going to Stuyvesant High. Have not been in a Blimpy's since.

I was born and raised on 7th street btw 1st and a, and then the second half of my childhood, my teenhood if you will was in Stuyvesant Town, so this plus the fact that my whole life now is taxi driving, making video, taking pictures, and blogging, IS AMAZING!! this has everything!!! I'm going to have to shoot a comparison video to match this.
Wow. I had forgotten about the Blimpie's, but the A & P to boot! Thanks so much, Grieve, for putting this up. Anyone out there remember a produce market where, I think, Theatre for the New City now is? "Three Guys from Brooklyn," it was called, or Two Guys, or Four Guys.

ReplyDeleteFrom 1:00 to about 1:28: 9th Street to 11th just passing the Asher Levy School. Looks very different. Very Lower East Sidey. :-)

ReplyDeleteTotally saw the apartment building complex at 1st and 4th Street I believe. And the public school for sure on the left around 10th/11th Street. Yay!
