'Keep 35 alive'

A few more photos from this evening's vigil at 35 Cooper Square... courtesy of Lisa R. Estimates put some 60 people in attendance, including Pete Hamill ... There were chants of "Keep 35 alive!" And some twits with yoga mats drifted by as if the group wasn't even there ...

  3. Candle light vigils, come on! Asian Pub was a loud dive bar. The building was completely gutted in 1998 including the storefront and windows. Now, the building is falling apart, and the foundation sinking. There are plenty of more worthy architectural treasures and causes in the city to focus on!

  6. It was very encouraging to hear residents speak in support of this building as well as the history and character of the neighborhood - and what makes a neighborhood. Thanks to everyone who came out and spoke.

It was somewhat disheartening to be out there in such an educational setting while students of the architecture/engineering schools could be seen in the windows of the nearby Cooper Union. They could have benefited from listening to Pete Hamill and others who care so much for the city they have built.

  7. Grieve, are they twits because they had yoga mats, because they didn't acknowlege the protest or because of both? I assume all the other people that walked by without yoga mats joined right in.

It's your blog and you can write what you want but this was kind of off base.

  8. @Kurt - Do not blame The Grieve, he was merely quoting an e I wrote him to which I attached these photos. It's my right to call the chicks in question twits because that's just what they were - they were so self-absorbed they just crashed through the area where people were speaking, all the while texting furiously, not even looking up as they banged into bystanders. And FYI yes, a number of less self-absorbed, non-yoga-mat-carrying citizens DID stop to inquire what was going on, and joined the vigil. There, ya satisfied now?

@Goggla - That is such a great point about the students. More voyeurs!
