Following up on our earlier item today about the weekend work at 35 Cooper Square ... according to a comment by @Roger_Paw:
I talked to one of the workers today. He was locking up the outer shed. I asked him if it were true that they were removing asbestos. He said yes. I asked if the building was going to be demolished and he said yes, in a week. I wanted to make sure I understood so I asked, "OK, so asbestos removal now, demolition in a week?" and he said yes.

What's the rush at 35 Cooper Square?
I have to agree with Uncle, one of the commenters from the other post, who said that the claim of asbestos removal was bs. The worker I talked to had no protective gear on. And from the photos you can tell there's no protective material around the building. Nope. It's clear the building is simply being dismantled and ready for demolition.

Told ya. And I thought the same thing about asbestos removal, it's not like they would have built it in originally. And I've never heard of adding asbestos at a later date.

ReplyDeleteAsbestos assessment is required prior to demolition under the new rules, but the owner must (I'm quoting the DEP law) "post a general notification at all main entrances to the structure. Postings of this notification shall be in English and Spanish, at eye level in a conspicuous well-lit place that can be viewed by the public without obstruction. Information provided in the notification shall include contractor, project location, that the project is regulated by NYC DEP, and the Call Center “311” for government information and services. The notice shall have the following heading: NOTICE OF ASBESTOS ABATEMENT"

so even if it's an asbestos abatement it may be a prelim to demolition, and it looks like they haven't complied with the law anyway.
There is a vacate notice at the DoB, and the place is boarded up. Now's the time to call 311, CB3, Rosie Mendez, Deborah Glick, Tom Duane, GVSHP, HDC, the press and any celebs you know.
To report the illegal demolition of 35 Cooper Square, please call 311, who will put you in touch with a building specialist. You may have to be on hold for a while but please pursue the complaint. Thank you.
