Police: Seizure causes smash-up at St. Marks Place and Avenue A

A frightening scene last night on St. Mark's Place and Avenue A. This car hit the wall of the Sushi Lounge after taking out the pay phone on St. Mark's Place. Police on the scene told Bob Arihood, who took the top photo, that the driver had a seizure while making a U-turn. At this time we don't have any further information on the driver, who worked nearby, or of any injuries.

  1. Why do idiots make U-turns on Avenue A or anywhere for that matter? I recently saw an old guy make a U-turn on Avenue B and he nearly took out a pedestrian.

  2. There's nothing wrong with making u turns. So that's a very stupid comment on your hand. U turns are legal, unless there's a no u turn sign around.

  3. Um, actually u-turns are illegal in "business districts of New York City" (which I'm pretty sure would include this commercial stretch of Avenue A):

    but hey, thanks for playing!

  4. I have to agree with the first poster. There isn't enough space on A to uturn. Also too many pedestrians. Not worth taking the chance of running someone over...or crashing into a wall.

  5. I think the law says you can make a u-turn unless you are having a seizure, at which point you should not make a u-turn.

Why is the legality of a U-turn being made the point here? The driver had a seizure which caused a car accident. If they had been travelling straight and not turning, they would most likely have done even more damage to whatever was in their way due to increased speed. So *thankfully* for pedestrians and anyone in a close vicinity, the driver was doing a u-turn and didn't cause any more damage than they could have.

Seizures are scary stuff, especially at a time like this. I hope the driver and passers by are ok.

  7. We're hearing secondhand the guy had a seizure. Kind of convenient to have happened to have had a seizure when you're making an illegal u-turn!

Oh sorry, I forgot, I'm not cynical enough to make comments on this blog!! Carry on...

  9. Regardless, it was an inconvenient time to have a seizure; the man had incredible poor timing.
