Walls and memories left at Carmine's

Early last week, Julie Shapiro at DNAinfo reported that the bar and other fixtures from shuttered EV Grieve favorite Carmine's were sold and shipped to the Old Stein Inn near Annapolis, Md.

The 107-year old eatery at the South Street Seaport looked like this...

    I was watching Marathon Man the other night. After they hold Hoffman in the cell and torture him ("Is it safe?") he takes off running, rounds the corner, right past Carmines. Then William Devane chases him past Carmines. Then the paid killers chase him, right past Carmines. I only went in there a few times, thought it would last forever.

    I was just wondering about this place. Weren't they going to re-open somewhere else? Did anyone ever find out exactly why they closed? That was the only place I've ever seen Yankee and Red Sox fans get along...

    Rent increase, I believe, was the official reason.

    The owner was looking at other storefronts in the Seaport, but it just didn't happen.
