Bold Bowery bums burglarize Bowery Beef

Grub Street has news that Bowery Beef has been robbed several times of late... Here's part of the email to Grub Street from Bowery Beef's Ray LeMoine, who says that since opening, "we've seen some spectacular bum crime."

Most notably, in the last week nights our register has been robbed three times. By the third attempt the take was approximately $6 in coinage--pretty baller. Last night they just took the whole register. This morning, just after opening, another cool junkie snatched aniPod from behind the counter while our barrista used the bathroom. In the last seven days crime has cost us over $1000. Of course, we are a unique operation. Our cafe is the entryway to the Bowery Poetry Club, known for open mic poetry slams, sweet late-night funk fusion concerts and "Ladies in Free B4 11"-style ragers. But they post a security guard in the cafe. So these are some bold junkies.

I have some pretty short shorts on the Bowery from the Peels/DBGB crowd.

I never heard any official word. I never saw too many people inside the place...

  6. @Grieve - I'll give you 5/10 for your half-assed attempt. :)

  7. Aren't we painting Bowery Bums with a pretty broad brush here? The culprits may be junkies, but I doubt it's local bums. Isn't it more likey that this place is being ripped off by patrons of the club?

  8. @EV Grieve and Goggla: Butt seriously folks...if I got that kind of dough robbed from me I'd be bummed out too. Okay, I'm going to butt out now.

  9. recently i've seen more folks doing that junkie nod (where they never fall down).
although i don't think there are more folks begging.
but i'm talking about first and second avenues, 9th to 14th streets. i haven't been on the bowery a lot lately. most of the places i used to go to are gone.

  14. Not surprising. This is a place that advertises "dog shit" in the menu in the window - some kind of Sloppy Joe. Classy.

  15. It wasn't me...I was with Marty the entire time drinking tall boys, wasn't I, Marty. On top of that, I don't even like Bowery Beef.

  17. @Uncle Waltie: Yes, I can vouch for you! I'm drinking one right now in your honor! Sip ahoy! (Please note that sip ahoy is a patented Uncle Waltie catch-phrase, use only with permission.)

  18. Sorry to label the robbers bums. I don't even mean to suggest that druggies are bad. This was meant to be funny, but the people we think are robbing us are awesome Bowery methadone clinic types. Who has the time to steal change and then a whole register between 3-9am over a few nights. Awesome druggies I hope. Otherwise, you're stealing nothing. Ray
