A Cooper Union memo about St. Mark's Bookshop

Last week the Board of Trustees discussed the ongoing matter regarding St. Mark’s Bookshop, which we understand many in the Cooper community have been following. We are sharing with you the outcome of that meeting before we inform those outside of The Cooper Union who have expressed interest in the resolution of St. Mark’s request. The Board of The Cooper Union is giving serious consideration to the matter regarding St. Mark's Bookshop. After discussion at its recent meeting, the Board decided to have the situation thoroughly examined by its Finance and Business Affairs committee. The Board believes that the request deserves the committee's analysis, the outcome of which will be announced at the end of October.

This is in line with what the St. Mark's owners told Jeremiah Moss last Friday.

    Why is it always so obvious when a lawyer writes something? Do these people not have a huge PR department that could have made it at least sound like they were going to pretend to do something besides have more meetings to talk about dates for more meetings?

    every time somebody sets up a committee to study something in order to come to a resolution it usually means "we can't think of a way to say no" so we will study the problem while we consult with our attorneys and the thesaurus.

    They added this paragraph later that day...
    "As background, Cooper Union did not request a rent increase from St. Mark’s. The current rent is based on the terms of a Sublease Agreement executed by The Cooper Union and St. Mark’s Bookshop in 2008. In addition, The Cooper Union does not own the property occupied by the bookshop or other tenants at 29 Third Avenue. The college leases the space from the owner and, in turn sublets the retail space to the tenants."

    Well it is going to a free education to all the students at Cooper Union; how else can they do it?
