Oh, great: East Village well-represented in 'best dive bars in NYC' listicle

Complex magazine has issued a listicle titled The 50 Best Dive Bars in NYC.

As we've discussed here before, "dive bar" is a tired, meaningless term that should be retired. But! For the sake of a pointless Friday conversation... here are the nearby bars that made the top-50 list.

2 — The Holiday

5 — Blarney Cove

18 — Vazac's

27 — Doc Holliday's

35 — Cherry Tavern

40 — Milano's

  1. The overall list isn't as awful as I imagined based on their EV choices. 11th Street bar a dive? Hardly. Crocodile Lounge? HEATHERS?!?! Why not the Grassroots? They sell $2 pints of Bud during happy hour. And it's a shithole. I've seen dead mice in there. Fits the criteria.

  2. ^^agreed 11th street bar isn't a dive bar -- it's an irish pub much like st. dymphna's, scratcher, swift's, lunasa...

continental ain't no dive bar no more --it's been transformed to a yuppie lounge

fish bar should be on this list

and mars would have been on the top of this list

[and a dive bar does not necessarily connotes a shithole place; it's “A church for down-and-outers and those who romanticize them, a rare place where high and low rub elbows — bums and poets, thieves and slumming celebrities. It’s a place that wears its history proudly.”*]

at least there are no fratboy douchebaggery and wooooo-wooooers in these bars

  6. Coal Yard (which I love) hasn't been around long enough to make this list (Sorry Molly!). Totally surprised that Sophie's isn't on here & I totally agree that 11th St. Bar is NOT a dive...

  7. Who in their right mind would want to publicize a list like this? It's going to undermine the very character of some of these places. If you need a list, you should not be hanging out in dive bars.

  9. Do we need to thank Complex for inviting (the rest of) everybody who doesn't know better into our neighborhood? And, is there a way to stop dive mag's like this one from publicizing the East Village?

  10. A guy from village voice published a book called new york citys best dive bars a bit ago. EV was well represented, including joes etc if I recall. He seemed like he kind of got the idea that this list missed.

Got it for some buddies, funny, its in everyones apt bathrooms. Perfect length articles... ha.
