An appreciation: The Tompkins Square Branch of The New York Public Library


For no particular reason... too often we mourn instead of appreciate around here at EVG...

Talked with several people recently who had no idea the branch had a nice selection of DVDs...




I always just go in and take a chance at finding something. I always do. But you have to be a little flexible. You can also put a movie on hold via the library website and have your own little Qwikster Netflix.

    same goes for the Ottendorfer branch too/. and you may borrow laptops to use in the library. plus, in addition to the dvds, they have a great collection of printed, tactile books, which one can also put on hold and be picked-up at Ottendorfer or any NYPL branch one chooses and prefers.

    Nomination for appreciation: the playground across the street from this library. Such a great environment especially on nice spring/summer days where you get such a unique cross section of dancers, boxers, gymnasts, parkour dudes doing flips off the monkey bars... along with standard basketball/wall ball games. I have an "only in NY" moment every time I workout there.

    The library rules! Just remember to return those movies on time. I think it's $1.50 a day now. Or don't remember, the library needs every dollar it can get these days.

    Mulberry Street location even has a drop box.

    Someone once told me that if you can get to the roof of the library you get fantastic view of the beautiful back garden of the Ansel Adams house on 11th Street.

    Whereas I appreciate the location of this library, it is the loudest, most unruly branch I have ever been in, and the librarians do nothing about it. The same issues do not exist at either Ottendorfer or Hamilton Fish.
