Chimney collapse at 528 E. 13th St.

Several readers have told us about a chimney collapse at 528 E. 13th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B around 8:30 tonight...

Witnesses said that everyone is OK... however, residents who live in the rear of the building will have to spend tonight (and perhaps a few other nights too) elsewhere... the Red Cross was going to put anyone up who needed it... One resident described the noise as "sounding like an earthquake."

The following photos are from EV Grieve reader Deanne Draeger...

According to the DOB, there have been three complaints against the building... In September 1997, "EAST WALLOUT OF PLUMP REAR YARD CHIMNEY PULLING AWAY FROM BLDG. BROKEN SHAFT."

On Oct. 8, 2010 — "BRICK CHIMNEY SEPARATING" ... and Sept. 22, 2010, "FAILURE TO MAINTAIN BUILDING WALL. NOTED: STRUCTURAL STRESS CRACKS AT NUMEROUS LOCATIONS ON ALL FLOORS OF EAST ELEVATION."

According to the DOB, Crisari Realty is the owner.

  1. way to go crisari realty.
grieve - thanks for posting this stuff. it's really important to be able to put names with real estate crimes. in nyc landlords have LONG been held UNACCOUNTABLE for their actions, these days more than ever, thanks to the blatant corruption between the bloomberg administration and the DOB.

  2. Cable & Internet is out. As well as heat and hot water. What's up with that Sandra?

  3. It's bad enough the building is falling down and so many tenants forced to temporarily move out, but for those left inside life without heat, hot water, cable & internet is pretty miserable at 528. Sort it out please lanlol.

  5. It's Friday and my wife and I still aren't allowed to return to our apartment. The official word from Crisari Realty as of last night was their "job is done".

  6. To any other tenants who are displaced from 528: have you heard anything about a rent reduction/reimbursement? Are any of you staying in a hotel? Has Crisari Realty contacted you about reimbursement for a hotel?

Thank you EV Grieve! I am a regular reader now!
