Awnings for 5 Napkin Burger — and its sidewalk cafe

East Village resident Rob took this photo on the way to work yesterday ... not sure if the awnings at the incoming hamburger joint on 14th Street at Third Avenue will be big enough to cover their sidewalk cafe.

On Monday night, the CB3/SLA committee OK'd a sidewalk cafe for 5 Napkin, as Eater reported.

Previously, we questioned whether there was even enough room for a sidewalk cafe here. We took the following photos in the morning during the holidays. Just wait until, say, 7 p.m. some nice spring night.

Guess we'll find out.

Previously on EV Grieve:
Will there be enough room for a sidewalk cafe outside the new 5 Napkin Burger on 14th and Third?

  1. This will really mess my day up when I'm walking on 14th Street in order to get somewhere. So, I guess it will really never mess my day up.

  2. It's obvious to anyone who travels that corner (as I do several times a day) that there isn't enough room. But what of the falafel carts and fruit vendors who have been on that stretch of 14th? Where are they going to go? They can't simply move a bit West in front of Trader Joes because there are already other vendors there, including food trucks. I'm so sick of this hamburger shit.

  3. Yumm, I can't imagine anything nicer than sitting outside in the fumes of traffic at 14th and 3rd.

Really? This isn't Naples here - why would they even want an sidewalk cafe? $50 says it's so they can pretend they didn't notice smokers out there (like Heartland in Union Square).

  4. Anyone who walks that corner regularly like I do knows that the 3rd Ave side is dangerous after a rainstorm. Water collects in the curb and when the bus pulls up, you get showered with water if you're on the sidewalk. Your photo even shows a pool of water on a dry day.

Do you know if the outside tables will be on 14th Street AND 3rd Ave, or just one side?

  5. I can't imagine that anyone who approved sidewalk seating at that location ever bothered to actually walk by there. It's pure insanity.

  6. They can keep their napkins and their soppy wet burgers and idiotic sidewalk cafe. If thats not enough I checked out their website and my douche alarm sounded right away. The douche meter was pinned. Its not just drippy burgers, get ready for their "hand-crafted sushi". Yay. Obviously, I will never eat here. But sad to say this place might be perfect for the new EV.

  7. I wish I could have gone to the meeting to put in a protest against this, but I was out of town. SIGH! Like LvV I have to make my way past this corner a lot, as do many many others. Oy.

At least it's a low building and there's not another high rise in that spot.

  8. You can go to as many meetings as you want, there is nothing that can be done to impact turning down a sidewalk cafe application. Every one is approved as long as it's on the pre-determined streets that are allowed to apply for sidewalk cafes. They don't take the community board's recommendation if they ask for a denial, they don't adhere their own rules of how much space is required, they don't find out if the plans submitted by the restaurant are true or real, and they don't follow up on complaints.
