There is now a website dedicated to the work of Jim Joe

From the EV Grieve inbox... a news release...

For immediate release…

The Cult Of Joe (cultofjoe.com) is a collective of art fans who appreciate the work of NYC’s mysterious “street artist” Jim Joe. Jim Joe is an artist whose simplistic style stands out quite a bit from the ocean of graffiti scribbles that plaster NYC’s East Village and surrounding areas. From his cursive “tags” to his often nonsensical Samo-esque quotes, to his drawings on stickers to his writings on trash, his distinct style makes him easy to spot. This website is merely an attempt to document his work.

Launched on January 1st 2012, The Cult of Joe website is by far the largest collection of Jim Joe photos on the web with over 500 photos shot over the last 2 years mainly by three super fans known as xxxJORDYxxx, Bomarr and Setlasmon. We’re also encouraging all New Yorkers and visitors to NYC to join The Cult Of Joe by snapping a Jim Joe photo, submitting it to the Cult of Joe website and then posting it on Facebook or Tweeting it. Submit Jim Joe photos to : cultofjoe@gmail.com with the subject line “Submission,” or via Twitter, by adding the hashtag #cultofjoe or #jimjoe

  1. Yeah, I got this notice too. "Nonsensical Samo-esque quotes" --- yeah, way to casually suggest that you're in the same league with Basquiat, Jim Joe. Talk about presumptuous.

  3. I'm starting a website documenting dogs pissing on fire hydrants and street signs to mark their territory.

  4. im setlasmon, one of the founders of the cult of joe.

as far as a comparison to Basquiat the presumption is all ours. Jim Joe is not involved with the site and did not write the copy. the phrases are similar to what Samo used to write, were not trying to compare him to his entire body of work.

as for him destroying public property... please. for the most part JJ writes in already tagged up areas. are your sensitive eyes bothered by anything but blank grey walls? go destroy a crossword puzzle...

  5. Well Chet, as a super who has to maintain a residential building, I deal with private property not public as you write. An astonishing amount of time and money is consumed painting over or using toxic solvents to remove self-promoting tags left by pea brains like JimJoe.

His "body of work" is just the output of another infant spreading poop on the wall. The rest of us have to clean it up and change his diaper because at his mental age of 2 the world revolves around him.

  8. Give me a f''n break! This kid vandalizes stuff for two years, possessing no discernable style, skill, or relevance and he's already concerned with his legacy? Seriously?!

  9. @chet --

art history lesson: SAMO was a collaboration between jean-michel basquiat & al diaz (and a few other of their high school friends.) so not only have you *inconceivably* compared jim joe to basquiat, you've also (incorrectly) attributed quotes to the solo work of jm basquiat.

(translation: SAMO was not one person. i know this information isn't in that basquiat film from the 90s, is far less romantic & dramatic, which is why i'm certain you don't know it.)

here's an idea: read a book. knowing is half the battle.

  16. So... SAMO (which was Al Diaz and Jean-Michel Basquiat, but mostly Basquiat) only wrote for about a year. Wrote mostly in SoHo and Chelsea to attract the attention of gallerists. And was mostly interested in the attention he got personally,

I think it's a pretty fair guess to say y'all would be shitting on SAMO too if you got the chance while he was around. In fact theyre were plenty of muther fuckers hatin on SAMO back in the day. It's just how it works.

Im not sayin im just sayin.

  18. @chet. Areas already tagged? That building on 13th between 3rd and 4th where somehow he got up to an unreachable window and marred a historic building?? Youre a jim joke. This blog is the idea a straight out of nyu student from MN looking for 5 min of fame would get.

  19. I threw up last week and the vomit was prolific! It was a collaboration between my stomach, a lot of vodka and some cold pizza at 4am. It was an epic statement on the current state of the East Village, totally worthy of a blog, facebook, twitter, tumblr and posterous account. Wooster Collective ran a photo! I even got a t-shirt, sneaker and toy deal out of it!!!
