Just two weeks ago, we noted that Curly's Vegetarian Lunch moved on, and the similar-menued 14 Carrot Vegetarian opened in its space on East 14th Street ... and just like that ... @SamStorer is back with this news: 14 Carrot is gone, and neighbor Artichoke has expanded...
This was all calculated. They have been trying to bully their way into the space. Much thanks to Curly's. We supported them for a beer and wine but it was all just an escape tactic. I saw it coming.
ReplyDeleteArtichoke could not exist without the noob-EV lemmings who do whatever, I don't know, Time Out New York or Yelp or whomever tells them to do. I did try Artichoke back when it first opened; its pizza is sloppy and greasy and I'm sorry, I'm just going to say it: it's shitty, suburban, idiot food. The hype for that place is insane.
ReplyDeleteI get a simple plain cheese pizza with whole-wheat crust from Vinny Vincenz about once a week (and an eggplant parm -- OMG, the VV eggplant parm is heaven itself), and it is sublime. Vinny's understands actual food, not drunk-eating and "I like to wait on lines."

Ha, I'm glad that that was your reaction ... I was a tad angry before, heh. But seriously, Vincenz's is the bomb. And it's *right there*, a stone's throw from Artichoke. I just want to yell at all the people always on the pathetic Artichoke line, You do realize 10x better pizza is a half-block away? But I know they wouldn't care anyway. These are the suburban dipshits who dip their pizza slices in ranch dressing.

ReplyDeleteDid Curly's even have beer and wine yet. Even if Curly's or 14 Carrot were to transfer their beer and wine licence artichoke would have to go before the Community Board.

@LvV-You are spot on re Vinny Vincenz, it's family friendly as well. Major Rube gridlock at the 14th street Artichoke.I also tryed one of their slices at their 10th Ave location, it was inedible.

Hey, the owners of Curly's have a new place at 246 East 14th Street , I had a great Mexican brunch there today- you can request any dish to be vegan or veggie....

ReplyDeleteso they have moved further west off of 2nd ave. is it still vegetarian/vegan, the same menu? Also, they were just awarded a beer and wine licence. Do they get to keep that to sell, or perhaps transfer to the new place? Glad to see that they are still around. Can't stand Artichoke.

I didn't think that they had a liquor license...
Curly's was on the docket for a beer and wine but scratched.
ReplyDeleteTortuga is realy delicious. It's Mexican serving meat, fish, veggie,vegan. free chips and salsa.
I'm always suspicious when a business (as Artichoke does) runs a "cash only" policy. I wonder why they don't want to show a paper trail of their incoming cash ???

ReplyDeleteSad to see them go. I liked Hotel Tortuga until they removed the soy chicken from the menu.
And in regards to Artichoke being "cash only," there are many restaurants in town that are cash only. There's nothing shady about it. It has to do with not wanting to give a percentage of the restaurant's profits to credit card companies.
I finally tried Chelsea's Artichoke branch.
ReplyDeleteWe ordered the namesake pizza-- a whole pie. The first bite was great, the second bite was good, by the third bite we were remarking how RICH & heavy it was. For the FIRST time in our lives, my husband and I couldn't finish an entire pie in one sitting.
Took the leftover half home and reheated it the next day. We couldn't even finish THAT in one sitting-- WAAAY too rich!
At least we got several meals out of it, but I'll never order another-- that thing should be an hors d'oerve portion, not an entree. (On the other hand, the Sicilian pie, at the next table, looked interesting--).
