Nino's Pizza is for sale

We came across this listing for Nino's Pizza, a favorite hub on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place ... According to the listing, "owner retiring and looking for a quick sale." No mention of key money, though the rent is $13,200 a month...

It's certainly possible that another pizzeria will take over the space, maybe even keeping the year-round Christmas decorations and the fountain drinks...

Or, possibly, given the way things seem to go around here, the space becomes [insert absurd foodie concept here]

Meanwhile, Sal's remains closed down the Avenue.

  1. Hate to see Nino's closing! It's too much to hope for, but maybe whoever buys it will leave it exactly the same.

  3. No!

One night during the later half of the "bad old days" I was out way way past everyone's bedtime, and I had two kids jump me... well, they were seconds from it. They were right upon me, and we were quite alone on Avenue A. The sun was just about to come up.

I quickly turned around and said "Hey who wants a slice and and a Snapple? I'm buying." They looked kinda confused, but nodded and they followed me 1/2 a block to Nino's late night take out window.

There, I handed them each two slices on a grease-drenched paper plate where they proceeded to stuff their faces, which I could not see as each had on Pele-Pele hooded jackets. I forked over the $20 I had on me to the window attendant and told the guy they could each get a Snapple, too.

I edged away slowly away from the window, backing up the whole time until they seemed more interested in the food than me. I scooted home and considered myself lucky as hell. I was shaking the whole time.

    Nino's probably saved my life.

  5. @Anonymous 4:36 PM: Not joking, just some wishful thinking that'll probably never happen.

  6. Nino's is nothing special but it has been there for a while, so in my mind it's an institution. I can't imagine anything other than a NY slice joint in that spot, it's the perfect spot for one. I hope it doesn't fall into the hands of the dollar-pizza movement.
