There's a Save Kate's Joint party tomorrow night

As you probably know, things aren't looking good for Kate's Joint, the 16-year-old vegetarian restaurant and bar on Avenue B at East Fourth Street. Per the indiegogo campaign under way:

Kate is currently in arrears with the landlord. Eviction notices have been sent, court appearances have been made, and if a substantial amount of money is not raised by April 11th, the next court date, the doors will shut permanently at Kate’s Joint.

Tomorrow night, a group of fans and neighbors are planning on throwing a party of sorts there starting at 7 (and going till midnight or so).

According to the Facebook events page (where you can RSVP and what not):

Come by on Wednesday for by a wide variety of healthy meals, just a couple drinks, or the only veggie wings to land on NY Mag's Top 5 Hot Wings list! It might be kind of fun to pack the restaurant with new and old friends for a night.

If you can't make it Wednesday, please thinking about having a meal there soon!

One of the party planners told us, "I live on the block and want to put up as much of a fight as possible. Losing Kate's will make me feel like there is just not hope for the hood..."

  1. I've been eating at Kate's for years, and I'll miss it, but with the best will in the world, if they can't meet the rent even after turning half the restaurant into a bar, it's hard to know how this will help.

  2. You know, I love the idea of this place but the service... uuuuuugh nightmarishly slow and annoyed that you're there

  3. Other than to inform the NSA of your plans, why would someone RSVP through facebook?

  4. So we raise a few thousand bucks for Kate's...what good will that do in the long run? If they're arrears in rent it must be a significant sum.

  5. another set up to get the space available for more rent. I have a suggestion..why not cash mob the original places in the East Village and all over and show how great they are..so some food critics could cover them and then the masses will follow. Stay up with inflation.

  6. For the same reason you can't borrow money to cover a recurring expense, how does a one off fundraiser do anything other than briefly postpone the inevitable?

  7. Yeah, it probably won't do much good, but I'll be stopping by (someone alert Facebook!).

  8. Went in there a few years back and the waitress girly got all hissy when I asked if they had burgers. they did not have a clearly labeled vegetarian sign then. told them to calm the eff down. could care less what happens to them.

  9. Feel bad as I am one of those who liked the place but stopped going, due to the horrific (not mean, or rude, just....comically absent) service.

Now that my nostalgia is setting in (quick, I know), I'm already kind of looking forward to going back again before they close, and waiting an hour or so with empty water for my meal. All told, the food is probably worth it.

  10. When I walked by last night, the sidewalk board said "Kate's in the kitchen!" really big. *Now* she decides to pay attention to why her business sucks? Getting hands on in the kitchen should be eye-opening at least.

  11. this place has the worst food and service in all of the EV - time for someone that knows what they are doing to takeover this prime location.

  12. I know how to save Kate's...make the food not suck, and the staff less sullen.
