A sidewalk shed arrives outside Vazac's

On Friday evening, workers arrived to start putting up a sidewalk shed around the perimeter of the Horseshoe Bar/Vazac's/7B here on the corner of Seventh Street and Avenue B...


There aren't any permits on file via the DOB website just yet... so we don't know what type of work will be done here...

Dave on 7th, who took the photo below, thought that the Seventh Street side of the shed might be a little crooked...


And the main topic of conversation... Depending on what's happening here ... perhaps this is the end of what's left of the four-story Peter Jarema Funeral Home ad ... ("air conditioned chapels") with its old exchange "OR4-2568."

As Ephemeral New York points out, Peter Jarema opened in 1906, and the copy on the wall says that they've been in business for more than 60 years, which dates the ad to the 1960s... in any event, we always hate to see little pieces of history like this wiped away...

    Maybe they're restoring along the top of the building? It's pretty ugly as is. I really don't know why they would go out of their way to remove the old ad. And would they wrap the entire building with the shed if they were only going to wipe away the ad?

    they are probably preparing to do brick work, which may by nessesity mean the destruction of the ad

    Agree with 11:24, it would be great if they were replace that stupid thing up top with a real proper cornice. (they still make 'em)
    Given that the Jarema sign is from the 60's (and simply looking at the building's brick work by sight, I'd say they are definitely going to be doing some major brick pointing. Sign will probably go away, as they will probably power wash the facade ass well.

    OR 4 seems to be ORchard 4, but it also looks like there used to be a TOmpkins Square 8 exchange that was discontinued in 1937.
