May Day this afternoon at Union Square
Well, all sorts of various Occupy Wall Street May Day marches eventually filtered into Union Square this afternoon for a "permitted" rally and musical performances ... there are reports of arrests throughout the city ... Here is Tim Pool of TimCast with streaming live video ...

ReplyDeleteI have mixed emotions on the actual OWS demonstrators, not the principle of OWS itself. But when I see the heavy police presence, helicopters (drones are next), I think of that wonderful American financier and overall good guy, Jay Gould, who after hiring strikebreakers, said: "I can hire one-half of the working class to kill the other half."

ReplyDeleteHere's one of my thoughts on OWS. I'm all for it, but they've got to modify their image somewhat. What some of them ought to do is to go to a thrift shop and buy a decent shirt, suit and tie and shoes and get then the could go to an old school tailor if there's any left in NY and get them tailored so they look like those d-bags in Anon 9:25's comment. Then have them mingle in with the crowd. Just think of what the people would do if they saw "actual" wall street businessmen joining the fray. The guy in the white t shirt in the last picture could pull that off no problem. If you want to market your message, it's all about image.
ReplyDelete@bayou - me, too. A year ago, I ran into Bob on Broadway and 12th as he was covering an immigration rights parade. I remember looking up the avenue at the crowd marching down from union Square, and there was Bob, right at the front, shooting away. That thought stayed with me as I marched that same path again yesterday. He will never be forgotten.

ReplyDeleteI was thinking about Bob following the recent Saturday night after the Anarchist Book Fair... thinking of how he would have covered it... He probably would have already been on Astor Place by the Starbucks with his camera!
Every so often, out of habit, I find myself going to NMNL weekend mornings to see what may have happened late the night before...
We all miss Bob A..one of his most significant b&w photos was taken 10 years ago of the Hare Krishna founder outside Tompkins Square Park sitting on a platform with an umbrella covering him at night..only Bob could get such a great night shot!!!
