Proto's Pizza opens today on Second Avenue

We've been watching the space where Proto's Pizza will open on Second Avenue between Third Street and Second Street... as the above photo shows, the place looks like a nice, pretentious-free pizzeria.

Owner Rob Proto left us this message:

Proto's Pizza is opening for business on Thursday, May 3rd. Looking forward to providing the East Village with high quality and great tasting pizza, sandwiches and much more.

Let us know if you try it ... And, as a bit of background...Earlier, Neighborhoodr had more on the pizzeria:

The owner’s first go at a pizza place. Aims to hit the sweet spot of offering a high-quality slice for around $2.50. No dollar slices here. "I'd rather go out of business than have to compromise quality. You’re in New York. Do it right," says Mr. Proto, a Brooklyn native.

  1. I heard a restaurant owner once say on average it costs about $3.50 for a pizza shop to make a pizza PIE so who is he kidding with this stance against $1.00 SLICES?

  3. Cautiously optimistic about a pizza place being opened by a guy from Brooklyn - been burned before on those credentials, but this one isn't fancy-pizza so we'll see.

Yes, because the pizza is obviously the only expense. Nobody has to pay rent, utilities, taxes, salaries or anything else. These greedy businessmen are always just ripping us off.

  9. Just stopped by and picked up a couple slices - a slice of white and a slice of their pan pizza. White slice was awesome, and the pan pizza was surprisingly fluffy and airy. Was worried it was going to be too dense but it was very much the opposite. Much better place than the crap on 1st Ave between 2nd and 1st, will definitely be stopping by.

Talked to Rob, he's a very cool guy. I tried to give them a tip but they wouldn't take it.

  11. good to know, as this place is where it needs to be in my opinion -- i.e., inbetween my apartment and the subway so I can pick up a slice on the way home. Will check it out.

  12. I just went there tonight and the pizza was damn tasty! Sure it is a little pricey ($3.50 for a Sicilian) but it tasted like crispy/chewy tomatoey cheesy goodness to me! I actually was contemplating going back for another slice even though I took it to go. Welcome to the 'Hood! Proto's!
