Zee's Pet Shop is now closed

[Bobby Williams]

Zee's Pet Shop on Avenue B just off East 10th Street had been going out of business for, well, a seemingly really long time...

As of yesterday, the store is officially now closed. I had a post in March 2010 about the space being for lease.

Mikey's on Seventh Street and Furry Land are other recent casualties... I don't own a pet. So, where do people shop these days for pet supplies in the neighborhood?

  1. Sadly I use amazon. I found food and wee wee pads are much cheaper through amazon than neighborhood places.

  3. Wag.com. Any order over $49 is delivered free next day, even if you live up six flights, and they stock anything you could possibly want or need.

  4. I used to shop at Animal Crackers on 2nd between 1st and A but they're kind of pricey. And when they were shut down by the NYPD for a few days last year (link):

I got spooked and never shopped there again.

I shop at Petopia on A between 2nd and 3rd Streets now. I love that place!

  5. Whisker's. It's a bit west for us who live in Alphabet City, but it is a solid, well-stocked neighborhood business with a very knowledgeable staff.

  6. Also use wag.com and sometimes Whiskers on 9th, very nice store.

  7. I go to Petopia on 14th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A. The people who work there are really nice, and their prices are good. I also visit the Petopia on Avenue A when I am down that way. Zee's was so packed with merchandise that it was hard to shop in there, and I couldn't support Furry Land. I always felt so bad for those birds roasting out front in the summer.

  8. I go to Pacific Aquarium down on Delancey for crickets. My gecko loves them! I tell her it's Chinese take-out.

  9. I shop at "Whiskers" and "Puppy Love Kitty Kat", both on East 9th St (between 2nd & 3rd Ave, and between Ave A and 1st Ave, respectively).

"Petopia" on Ave A around 2nd St is open a little later at night in a pinch though.

  10. Trader joes and the turkey stall for bones at the farmers market. I'm not sad that zee's pet shop has closed. I once went in there and this lady was smoking inside that tiny store with a kid next to her. The day the store was closing, I walked in to maybe score some good deals on dog food. It said 50% off a $17 bag food and the store owner came up to me and said I could have it for 12. I guess he figured EV residents cant do math

  11. Whiskers on 9th street is a big-little store; not a chain—although it has a branch in Astoria—but it's amazingly well-stocked, with knowledgeable staff. Phil is legendary for being able to advise you on almost any pet issue—he helped me greatly with holistic care for my dog when she had cancer, and with his help, I was able to prolong her life two whole years.

Plus, they deliver to any of the boroughs except Staten Island. (Sorry, Staten Island!)
