We like this cookie mural, but Tony Goldman does not

Lower East Side resident Luke Mathews recently asked me about the Houston-Bowery mural wall ... he had an idea and wanted to run it by the powers-that-be... I told him Tony Goldman and Goldman Properties were in charge of the wall ... curated and organized in collaboration with The Hole.

Luke shared his idea with me. (Actually, he has two variations.) I liked it. I've always liked those fudge-striped cookies too.

Apparently Luke received Tony Goldman's contact information.

On Tuesday, given that I was somewhat invested in this, Luke shared Goldman's one-word reaction to the mural idea...

Luke, who has never done a mural and enjoys photography, found a positive in all this — "happy that I got a response at least."

  1. I love this mural. I love the contrasting colors and those cookies are such a delicious treat.

  2. That's just MEAN. And snotty and arrogant. Someone who took the time to do a mockup and seek you out deserves more than a one-word dismissive snippy retort.

I think the second version is funny and clever. Deliciously Pop-Arty! I'd never considered the graphic architectural appeal of those iconic childhood cookies before.

    Haters gonna hate.

It's better looking than the red, white, and blue catastrophe that's up there now!

  4. I like this better than any of the other recent murals, except maybe those Os Gemeos guys.

  5. I think it's a great looking mural and deserves a better response than this. That's really rude.

  6. it honestly seems like an attempt at ad/stealth marketing (where a nabisko logo would show up after a week), not art.
good for your boy for having the balls to submit his idea and all that. much respect. but this wall is intended as a legal showcase for established artists in the street art/graffiti world.
know your market, know your audience.
if i were to propose that evgrieve should publish a 10,000 words article about beet farming in 18th century romania it'd be just as "awful".

It has a Simpsons aesthetic to it. It's good Pop.

  10. oh, this just reminds me of my waiter days at Greene St. Restaurant, which Tony Bones owned. He was rarely a nice guy, and sure, he's full of himself, but blame the people around him for instilling that attitude. He's short, he's adopted and has other reasons to over-compensate; and I understand that he has lung cancer from years of smoking, so it's understandable if he's a lil' short with folks.

Luke kinda deserved the response he got, cuz he tried to jump the line. Instead of going right to the top, he probably should have gone through the curators, and let them tell Tony how great the proposal is. That's how people without taste know what's art.

And ya gotta give Tony credit: he's gotten more mileage out of a lil' sliver of land than most developers get with an entire condo plot.

  11. I like the second version.

And, regardless of TG's opinion, what a rude response!

  12. i absolutely love this idea. its fun happy beautiful pop art...and the image is recognizable by all and will surely make all passer-bys smile and feel a bit giddy.
in response to those folks who have an issue with luke proposing an idea even though he has never done a mural and may not know the exact appropriate ropes...you are ridiculous and are the epitome of the pretentiousness and what i find to be disgusting with the art world and what has happened to new york.
and i dont even know how to respond to the statements that tony's response was not only appropriate but too nice. you are clearly angry sad miserable people...as is he.
luke's mural idea blows the current red white and blue BORING mural and a few others from the past out of the water.

  13. Pffft.. you mean to tell me the one where the dude tagged his name 10,000 times is in any way better than this?! Pah-leeeese.. the bottom line is if Luke had said he was from Jonathan Levine's camp his mural would be considered a masterpiece.
