Old firehouse on East 11th Street no longer really looks like an old firehouse

In January, we posted about the former firehouse converted into residences on East 11th Street just east of Avenue B... two units were available to rent... the space is no longer on the market ...

... and it no longer has that firehouse look out front — workers painted it black yesterday.

Apparently black is in for former firehouses-turned-residences in NYC — just ask Anderson Cooper.

Updated: Dave on 7th notes that this space is now home, in part, to ALLDAYEVERYDAY, an integrated marketing communications and entertainment company whose clients include Michael Kors, Gawker Media and Cee Lo, among many others.

  1. A bit further down the same block toward Avenue C, and on the same side, was RUSH. It sold high quality weed in small amounts through a speakeasy-type opening in the door to the basement unit. This was, of course, back in the day -- 1979 or so.

  2. @Anon 1:48 - do you remember the Blue Door Store and the Black Door Store, a couple of buildings away from each other on 10th between 1st and A, that operated the same kind of business around the same time as RUSH?

  3. My wife and I live on this block and were highly saddened to see this building lose its distinctive red paint job (which had only recently been given a fresh new coat).

A typical example of our "more-of-the-same" culture.

@EV Grieve: Disappointed you missed the opportunity for a Rolling Stones-inspired headline for this post.

  5. Looked better red. Makes sense there's office space there. I'm pretty sure there was some form of baby dot com there in the late 90's when it was 'my' block. Sigh. Does anyone remember the summer when a bunch of crusty types were 'living' on a flat bed truck parked on this block?
