The former Mystery Lot sinks ... and rises

On Friday, we got a ground-level glimpse into the former Mystery Lot... Now EVG reader Katja provides an update on the action from above...

Also! It is rising! Here's the first sign of the new development above ground, wedged in the space between 123 Third Avenue and Chickpea...

As we noted in May — there is a retail listing...

  1. I just realized the mystery space was the site of a decrepit old boarded-up theater front for years. I used to walk by and dream of opening a new Fillmore East there. But I guess another high-end glass and steel condo is good too.

  2. @pinhead - that was the Jefferson, originally a vaudeville theater, then a movie palace. I still wonder what landfill those two old beheaded gargoyles that used to hold lighting in their beaks are resting in. Go here for a photo:

  3. @Anonymous 10:54: Thanks for the tip and the link! Yep, that's the place. I knew it with the cinder block front, marquee already gone.

I found another nice write-up here (check out the comments). Looks like the entrance was on 14th St and the actual auditorium--the bulk of the mystery lot--was on 13th. You can see it in the lower left of that great old Shorpy's photo too.

  4. Did anyone else notice the new fake stores are called "Karmic Koala" and "Dapper Drake"? Sheesh.
