Today's sign of the TSP Ratstravaganza

A reader noted this scene earlier today... after the meals were served to those in need on Avenue A along Tompkins Square Park... the remains...

  1. I'm all for handing out meals, but this is gross. It should be the organization's responsibility to clean up for itself. Pack it in, pack it out. That trash should be dumped in their own garbage facilities, and not left for others. Actually, the people receiving meals should be helping with the cleanup.

What's the organization that hands out these meals anyway? I'd like to tell them myself.

  2. I agree with the previous poster. There is no need to leave the mess behind. They are causing a huge problem for the community. Does anyone know how to get in touch with the group that gives out these meals? They are actually creating unsafe and unsanitary conditions for many of the people who eat these meals and spend much of their time in the park.

  4. i agree with the agreement. i'm in the park 2x a day, every day with my dog. coming through the sw corner is disgusting. it's shameful that the people who have so little waste so much, not to mention their lack of consideration for the park and others who use it. that said, the organizations that hand out food and meals should also be required to clean up before they leave. i've seen some volunteers do so, but obviously not all.

a year or so back i read that orlando fl had banned independent groups from giving out food in public places. it seemed callous at first but on further reading, the town govt explained that they took this action to eliminate this very problem: excessive litter and the resulting vermin problem that was causing a health issue for the entire city. instead, the needy were "forced" to go to churches and community centers for food where the mess was likely to be contained and cleaned up.

  5. Live on the block, we are very over it! Yes, the rats. the filth, and it's noisy- especially Wednesday evening and most of Saturday afternoon. It's also violent at times . . . people get angry, standing on line for two hours to do battle over bananas and stale bagels. It's at the point where the bad out ways the good that these people are supposedly doing.

  6. This is digusting, whoever is handing out the food (which is great and I thank them for it), need to handle their mess. This isn't even just stuff left behind by the people eating, there are the bulk boxes, etc that were clearly used by the volunteers.

  8. the litter these people create is on a daily basis, the trinity church also is another huge problem, they just leave the food all over the park, it really makes me fume when the garbage can is literally an arms reach away.
