An anecdote from the blackout

A longtime East Village resident shared this anecdote from last week... about a trip to the West Village to check on an elderly housebound couple ...

We ran for, and caught an infrequent bus. Surprisingly, although packed, people cheerfully made room for us. At some point, a rumor circulated that it was the bus driver's birthday. The entire bus sang "happy birthday," followed by "hip, hip hooray." The bus driver got on the loud speaker and said his birthday wasn't until March. We all had a good laugh, and felt better for it.

    my bus story -- driver using humor to keep anxious cranky, pushy NYers calm. at one point i heard him bellow, "do NOT make me put you in the time-out corner!"

    My bus driver on a crowded M15 last Wednesday was cracking jokes and saying he hoped everyone had used deodorant that morning. His friendly demeanor helped to keep people calm and even brought some smiles. I appreciated it, because I realize that bus drivers have a pretty stressful job, especially when riders get angry.

    Every time I get on a free bus, I thank the operator.

    Bus drivers, garbage men, utility workers, and everyone else who was out busting their a$$es to keep the city from grinding to an absolute halt after the storm -
    THESE ARE OUR EVERYDAY HEROES.
