From the EV Grieve inbox around 10:30 a.m.

A car alarm has been going off since 8 am on east 4th between a and b. Is it possible to get some service over here?!!?

Sincerely,

A resident and employee of east 4th street

I read an article about a homeonwner over on King St., who combatted a rude car alarm owner by affixing a poster with some choice words to the windshield of the offender's car using carpenter's glue.
Btw, is it true that (1) Susan Stetzer lives on 4th (A-B) and that she has a deal with local fire and police to minimize emergency alarms by having them go down 6th St. (my block) when they could also use 4th?

  6. when they have nothing else to do
and after they have their coffee
the police sometimes respond to this problem

  7. at lease you dont live in Greenwich Village, which the legendary Calvin Trillin, describes as, “a neighborhood where people from the suburbs come on weekends to test their car alarms.”

a great collection, a lot of pieces on NYC:

  9. Hey Bill, How is the fire dept. supposed to use E 4th st when E 4th st regularly has a line of honking cars and cabs stretching from Ave B, all the way past the intersection of 4th and A?
Be thankful for where you are. You could be on E. 4th st instead. (Better known as "Wooo! Avenue")

    PS.
And don't think that we don't still end up with plenty of siren blaring vehicles stuck in those stalled traffic lines anyway. I'd figure at least a couple of fire truck drivers would have wised up and stopped using 4th simply because they have a brain. Nobody had to tell them to.

  10. It was pretty impressive, but I managed to tune it out after an hour.

    (4th btw A & B)

  11. Funny, if any of us stood on a corner making that noise we'd be arrested. But a car owner can do it with his car alarm and nothing happens.

  12. Hey19 -- Trillin is a god! His bit on getting "a nice whitefish" at Russ & Daughters is one of my faves!

6th Street has at least as much traffic as 4th, and more sirens going down the block. A neighbor told me about the Susan Stetzer deal. She should be term limited out of the government.

  14. In this day and age, when car alarms are as ubiquitous as any other city noise, only sociopaths still arm their car alarms.

  15. @Spike, he really is. I think his "Asshole coefficient index" piece is one of his best, and prob would be enjoyed by a lot of people on this site. He is the best, I dont know where his brain comes from.

  16. Seems like as long as the noise is a woo-woo sound, whether from cars or weekenders, cops will ignore them.

  17. The Susan Stetzer rumor makes no sense if you know anything about either the way the bureaucracy works or, for that matter, where she lives, since she doesn't live on E 4th St.

I'm ok with term limits, but people shouldn't be thrown out of their jobs based on silly rumors, even if other people want the rumors to be true.

As an anarchist, I'm for a term limit of zero terms.

  19. Spike, Hey 19: Thanks for the links.
Yes, Trillin is the best. His "Tummy Trilogy" from 30 years ago remains the wittiest food writing ever, and if "About Alice" doesn't move you, you're not human.

  20. that's cute, the bitching about emergency vehicles using e. 6th...

try living on e. 14th. my mind no longer registers the sound of sirens when they happen.

  21. Why aren't car alarms banned? They are ineffective at reducing crime, but create misery for all around.

See the film "Noise" about one man's vigilante war against car alarms, by the way...
