A 'laundry bistro' in the works for East First Street

In its Plywood Report on Friday afternoon, Eater had some more details on the liquor license application for 44 E. First St. between Second Avenue and First Avenue ... "for what appears to be a laundry/bistro ... It may or may not be called Weary Dreamer."

This particular application for the Feb. 11 meeting isn't online yet... but there is a notice on the door that includes contact information for the applicant. So we sent an email.

Yes, it is true — our intention is to open a laundry bistro called The Wash House at 44 E. 1st Street. It will be a full service laundromat that will feature free wifi, flat screen tvs and a food bar. In addition, if the Community Board gives its approval, we will also serve beer & wine.

  1. brilliant ploy so customers can stain clothes then immediately wash them.

  2. I dont mind this idea, laundromats dont need to be as depressing as they are.

  3. Weary Dreamer? I guess "Beer Sudz & Dudz" would be too obvious.

  4. That's a pretty small space to do all of that in. Probably just another ploy to get a liquor license into that space. Washers & Dryers take up a lot of space. Sounds pretty fishy to me. Spin City tried to do that when they first opened sans the beer & wine and failed miserably.

What a ripoff. I was gonna open a Shoe Repair Bistro that features free wifi, a wide selection of Vibram soles, and a retro steam table. Also beer and wine served by hipster girls and guys with tattoos on skateboards.

  6. When my son was about 8 his big dream was to open a laudromat that had mini-golf in it. This dream was a result of the excrutiating boredom from being made to hang around the laundromat every week while we washed clothes. And now, that laundromat is a bar. But without the laundry, or the mini-golf, or the nice family that ran it.

  7. I have laundry in my own building now but back when I was a laundromat customer what I wouldn't give for a place with a Pac-man or Street Fighter II; hell any half-decent arcade game sure beats the hell out of no arcade game. When you do laundry its good to have some time-killing diversions. But whoever thought while doing their laundry "Man I wish I could get some bistro food in this place while I'm waiting for my loads". Kind of a shady plan I'd say.

  8. Agree about having diversions while doing laundry but this does sound like a lot of stuff to put in a small space- and how much are they going to charge for a wash? They have to pay for all those flat screens, wifi and bar staff after all...

  9. I imagine the profits from alcohol would cover the overheads and be profitable so laundry should be free!

  12. had one in college on the west coast, sloppy , sloppy mess. "Sip and Suds". I believe I lost several items of clothing at that place. Then again I was twenty and not that concerned about the details.

  13. Ok, I remembered the name incorrectly- it was Duds and Suds, and its still there, pool table, washing machines, bar and all!
