Former dry cleaners becoming a handmade ice cream shop on First Avenue

Hmm. EVG regular William Klayer notes the arrival of a rather cryptic sign at the former dry cleaners at 137 First Ave. between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street... as you can see: Handmade ice cream ~ summer 2013. No other info right the moment.

The address had a new broker starting in late December.

Do you think that we already have enough dessert around here...? Not a dessert person here so, just asking...

  1. Having a seasonal, niche business is way more useful than a dry cleaner...

  2. There's also a frozen yogurt place coming to 2nd Avenue btw. 7th St. and St. Mark's Place. Who eats all this ice cream and frozen yogurt? And the margins are so good that you can pay rent and expenses and still make a good profit?

  3. Oh for God's effin' sake, not another one of these foo-foo dessert places! We need the services that are being driven out of the neighborhood so as to accommodate this twee crap!

  5. I'm sorry. How could you possibly complain about losing a dry cleaner shop? There's several on every corner. Welcome to the neighborhood ice cream shop!

  6. Umm, I ❤ ice cream.

What with all the chain drama we've got going on, we can at least be happy it's not a Baskin-Robbins or a Dairy Queen.

  7. @Anon 4:13 - Oh and there's not a fro-yo/ice cream/dessert place spaced every 10 feet apart? What East Village do YOU live in? But this is all just part of a greater trend of the neighborhood swapping out relevant services for precious crap like "homemade ice cream".

  9. That dry cleaners used to give my son $1 at Halloween. It was his favorite stop on the trick or treating tour.
