    The hissing that comes from this pipe must surely sound like gentle ocean waves or chipping new-born birds for the surrounding apartments...perfect for sleeping!

    perhaps this is the steam that used to escape on 11th street just east of 1st ave - killed a tree in front of the mosque.
    good thing there are no trees here.
    do you think There is asbestos in the steam?
    con edison never replaced the tree. said it should not have been there in the first place.

    My husband grew up in Wisconsin and learned about the world via Mad Magazine and Frank Zappa. He said he never understood why Mad always portrayed steam coming up from the streets as though the city was always burning, and was fascinated with it. When he came to NY, it all made sense.

    That said, I too have been recently fascinted with the steam and glad you captured so many good photos. I particularly like the light in the early morning with the steam rising.

    Doubt if one would call it any hazardous environment as the tale is quite a good presentation to show with a lot’s of emotions attached. From dusk till the dawn and the next still continuing…hope this would have been stopped after any period…

    Don't stop taking pictures of steam pipes- It is one of the quintessential NYC street scenes and for some reason seeing them makes me feel a little burst of love for this city.
