[Last week]
We've been waiting to see what would emerge from behind the plywood at 3 St. Mark's Place just east of Third Avenue... where the gem-jewelry store moved next door...
Signs went up this week — Papaya King...
Per the Papaya King website:
Papaya King is the original. Accept no imitations. Since 1932, we have been serving our special recipe, one-of-a-kind franks and tropical drinks to New Yorkers and visitors of all ages and from all walks of life at our original 86th Street location. We have a passion for freshness, quality, flavor & fun. We cook your franks while facing you so that we can see each other’s smiles (and because it’s rude to have you stare at our backs).
Here's Ralph Gardner Jr. talking about them a few years back at The Wall Street Journal:
I almost feel foolish describing Papaya King and its franks, so familiar I assume it is to just about anybody who has landed in New York more than 15 minutes ago. But for the record, it serves an arguably unimprovable hot dog. Slightly spicy and garlicky, its casing explodes in your mouth to release its mouth-watering contents.
I hope they serve corn dogs
ReplyDeleteI approve of Papaya Dog, corporate franchise or not. I salute you, Papaya, and your delicious and inexpensive foodstuffs.
ReplyDeleteFirst Joe's, now Papaya King? Another win. Could the tide be turning at last?
ReplyDeleteI'm relieved it's not a Starbucks, but is anyone worried for Japadog?
ReplyDeleteNICE
ReplyDeleteI'm a vegetarian and i'm still happy about this!
Papaya King is 100% quintessentially New Yawk, plus it's the original working man's grub.
Seriously their dawgs are the one thing is miss about eating meat!
Still love the papaya juice though!
Yay
i like gray's papaya on 6th ave and west 8th st. i know, i know, it's out of the EV, but the stroll does you good, and you get to walkerby watch as you munch them delicious doggies!
ReplyDeleteI-)
Love the King!
ReplyDeleteWhy be worried for Japadog? Japadog is not for the working man... They'll be fine with their current clientele.
ReplyDeleteI must say, I am thrilled about Papaya King hitting St. Marks. Love the touch with the graffiti on the barricade...they get it. I've heard some interesting buzz about this new store. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
ReplyDelete"its casing explodes in your mouth to release its mouth-watering contents."
ReplyDeleteOh god, baby!! Oh-yes, yessss!!!!
Given the current state of St. Marks, this is certainly an appropriate establishment for that environment, and indeed a real plus.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...Ray?
ReplyDeletei will seriously go there just to hang out.
ReplyDeleteI guess Papaya Dog is too small a corporation to pick on for the against corporation people, unlike 7-11.
ReplyDeleteYes for Papaya King. No to Japadog or Crif's Dog.
