Reader report: Is a bike-accessories thief on the loose?

A reader who lives in the vicinity of Second Avenue and East Third Street sends along the following:

Someone stole my bike lights. They came with an Allen wrench and took them.

I just wanted to let people know that a thief is on the loose in the East Village and to keep their bike accessories with them.

The reader said the theft occurred yesterday morning or early afternoon.

  1. Yeah, you really have to remove your lights every time you leave your bike parked on the street -- even really cheap ones. I once watched a group of kids strip my bike bare in under three seconds, then skip across Canal and disappear before I could make it the ten yards or so over to it. This was in the middle of the day, broad daylight, and they had had some practice. Shit, they were quick. Even got the bell. And even the cheap ones add up.

  2. When isn't a anything-bicycle-related-thief not on the loose anywhere in NYC? If you don't have the kind of lights that easily snap on and off - GET THEM! Anything that can be removed by anyone operating a small, cordless, electric screwdriver with an allen-wrench bit will be removed. Don't put shit on your bike because it looks cool or pretty or whatever - put it on there because it can easily be removed and thrown into your bag when you lock you're bike up.

  5. I've had 2 seats stolen, lights, a horn, and wheels in the EV. YOU CAN'T LEAVE YOUR BIKE OUT OVERNIGHT.

If you do (or have to) know that there will be a risk.

  6. It would be nice if once in a while these a-holes were caught red-handed and their asses beat to a pulp AND the word 'thief' etched on their foreheads!

I iwll never forget christmas eve 2 years ago at my boyfriend's apt on east 6th street. the city was deserted and it was snowing heavily. we were exchangin gifts and i had just given him a $40 bike seat for his sh*tty bike that he used to commute. he loved it and went outside to put it on. about a half hr later we were drinking wine and basking in the christmas glow. he thanked me again for the bike seat and went to the window to look at it. i sh*t you not, it was gone.

  12. always been on the loose, I tried once keeping the pizza delivery bikes on the side and out of sight on 3 street instead of in front on Ave C to clear the carry out window, but it wasnt long after that before we caught some kid trying to get a wheel off and another disassembling the basket in the middle of the day, after that we quickly moved them back, wasnt worth the excitement.
