Report: Video shows attack on twin brothers in the East Village

Twin brothers were attacked by a group of men early Sunday morning on First Street near First Avenue, BoweryBoogie reported yesterday. (Read BB's post on the incident here.)

The attack was initially thought to have occurred near Sutra Lounge, whose management released a statement to BoweryBoogie. They note that surveillance video showed that the attack started on East First Street and traveled to First Avenue. "Sutra is working closely with the victim’s girlfriend to provide surveillance as well as any other help they need to help catch the criminals who brutally beat her boyfriend and will continue to help in any way that is necessary to get justice for them," per the statement.

Now Fox 5 has obtained surveillance video that shows the attack.

From Fox:

The NYPD said the case is definitely not closed. Police officials told me that a very active investigation is going on and that detectives hope to meet with the victim Friday to get information that can lead to arrests.

  1. I hang out in East Village and have never experienced any trouble. This is disturbing.

  2. Very upsetting. And the account of one of the men's girlfriend's dealings with the NYPD are, perhaps, even more upsetting.

I'm sure it's not easy being a cop in the EV and, yes, mistakes are made but, hello, instead of being defensive, the 9th Precinct should apologize and then deal with this. How hard could be to make arrests in this case?

  3. There is no doubt in my mind that this investigation suddenly became active, as if by magic, once the NYPD learned there was indeed a video which meant this would end up on television.

  5. When it comes to stories like this there is one side to the story, the others side and then the truth
When alcohol and attitude mix. this is the result.

  6. I have lived on this block for 19 years. I'm a native New Yorker and not troubled by the groups of people who come to "party" in my neighborhood every weekend. I've grown used to it. But what is very troubling is the lack of police foot patrol on this block. There are six bars on this short block (First Ave. btw First & Second St.), and HUGE crowds of drunken people gather on the sidewalks of this block every Thurs, Fri. and Sat night when the weather permits. Simply adding 2 police foot patrol officers to walk this block from midnight until bar closing time would make a big difference. The crowds who currently hang out on my block seem to feel they own the place- screaming at all hours, verbally (and now physically) harassing people who are merely trying to walk by. I can't fathom why there aren't any police patrolling this block when disorderly conduct on weekend nights has been an issue here for many years.
