Con Ed's 'constant ear-splitting' work on 14th and C

Some residents who live near East 14th Street and Avenue C are upset by ongoing noise from Con Ed crews working on the street... per one resident:

Last night ConEd did below-street level work until 3 AM at 14th and Ave C. Tonight they have been jackhammering for a full hour from 8 to 9 PM. It's so loud my daughter is crying!

This street work started several days ago. It always begins around 8 or 9 PM and then goes on for hours and hours.

Residents are beside themselves. We can't sleep, we can't function in our homes due to constant ear-splitting noise.

  1. the jackhammering tonight finally ended, around 12:30 AM!

according to the police officer i spoke with at the 9th precinct, con ed is legally allowed to do this sort of work 24 hours a day.

if these fuckers are out here tomorrow night, i'm taking matters into my own hands.

  5. Is this emergency work, or something thats been going on every nite?... my guess some sort of emergency, or everyone might enjoy another black out.

  6. It can't possibly be emergency, because it only starts after 8 PM. It's not 'round the clock as an emergency would indicate. Ms. Miguel at Con Ed claimed it was because the city mandated this time to not interfere with traffic. Dan Garodnick's office called. Hopefully if we complain enough we can get some relief!

  7. This particular manhole has been worked on for over 20 years. Often they do this work at night stating that DOT has given them the permit for only night work. If you know this street as I do, living here for over twenty years, that there is more traffic after 6 p.m. than there is during the day.

This work went on from last week and last Saturday started before 8 a.m.

According the person I finally got to at ConEd they are rethinking the night work due to the amounts of complaints. In the meantime I had contacted Dan Garodnicks and Rosie Mendez's offices without any reply and obviously no action taken. I can't tell you how ill I was today and still suffering pains due to the stress this has caused me.

  8. Used to live in StuyTown in the AveC loop...
If this is an traffic issue because of daytime highway exit driving, then DOT should stop all alternate parking on both sides of ave C up thru 14th St [and include the inner road too]...
That would leave more space for driving ... that would be my solution,
