Tree pit expansion, tree planting and installation of tree guards is being done in the vicinity of the Con Ed plant with joint funding from Con Ed Settlement Fund and the Parks Department. The Settlement Fund arose from litigation over the 14th Street power plant expansion in the early 2000s and is administered by CB3 -- details on the CB3 website.
ReplyDeleteThe work is being done by the NYC Tree Trust, a non-profit affiliate of the Parks Dept. They will be working with LES Ecology Center and others to develop "tree stewardship" for each site -- volunteers welcome and needed.

ReplyDeleteThe volunteer events to plant ground cover plants and daffodil bulbs at these 170 expanded tree beds will take place throughout the month of September. These dates will shortly be posted on the Lower East Side Ecology Center Calendar and registration will be thru their email (info@lesecologycenter.org)

This whole initiative was a surprise. They removed expensive paving stones we purchased and installed just two years ago, replacing them with a mound of wood chips which has already been swept away. Seems outrageous they can do this without permission. Any idea how we can get the pavers back?
