East Village neighbors come together for Giuseppi Logan

Word circulated on Saturday morning that Tompkins Square Park regular Giuseppi Logan had been jumped earlier in the day on East Ninth Street. The soft-spoken musician didn't offer many more details. (Apparently nothing had been taken from him since he didn't really have anything.)

Upon hearing this, many residents via Facebook came together and took up a collection for the 78-year-old Logan during the annual 9th Street A-1 Block Association Block Party.

On Sunday morning, an East Ninth Street resident presented Logan with the money that people had collected.

"Giuseppi was quite grateful and said repeatedly 'God bless you, God bless you all, this really helps me,'" said the resident who delivered the money.

Also on Saturday, resident Patrick Salt Ryan gave Logan a tenor saxophone (someone had left it in bar Ryan worked in some years earlier). Logan was quite pleased with the gift...

  1. I hope the people that accused him of lying shut their mouths and don't begrudge that he received a donation. I think it's lovely that so many people came together for him.

  2. Word on the benches of Tompkins Square park is that he didn't get mugged but just fell, something he does quite frequently. Do we know of any complaint, investigation around this incident ? Is the police looking for anyone ?

    1. I do not get it-why even question this? You seem like a horrible human being 'anonymous' --yer bitterness blows our minds

  4. It is obvious that a fall wouldn't create a lump like that...and to speculate that makes you someone I would like to meet on the benches--why even question it?

  9. I love hearing Giuseppi's sax when I pass through TSP and am glad he's ok. It's heartwarming to know there are so many neighbors who care.

  10. Spent yesterday with him in the park. He's doing just fine. Music never sounded so good! Solo jazz saxophone in Tompkins Square Park on a sunny day is just about heaven.

  11. Anonymous @ 9:33: word. We don't know how this happened to him, but it doesn't matter, finally: the man is a true gem who deserves to be treasured.

  12. This fella brightens my day every time he is playing in the park. He is the one of the last cool things in the EV. To question the situation...well you're just not cool.

  13. I am glad he survived the attack. I hope he isn't feeling too much pain now. Does anyone know if he is in touch with his son? I know they reunited a few years ago.

  14. I'm not cool, but I try to be realistic. His gift to all of us is real, and true. Bless him for sharing it so freely.

  15. Seems like a nice old fellow, wish him the best. Apparently I am the only one that finds the endlessly repeated squawking of the same 16 bars of the same corny song, off key and off tempo mind you, less than magical.
    Guess I don't dig "jazz".
Glad it brings others such joy though.
