Prepping for the NYC Pizza Run in Tompkins Square Park

Oh. The NYC Pizza Run starts this morning at 11 in Tompkins Square Park.

From the website!

What does participating entail?

Participants will run four laps around the park, counterclockwise. The total distance of the race is 2.25 miles. After lap 1, lap 2, and lap 3, there will be a “pizza station” set up where participants must stop to eat a slice of pizza before they can continue with the next lap. The first person to complete the run will be crowned the NYC Pizza Run Champion!

It costs $50 to enter, which includes an official race bib, the pizza and drinks afterwards at Common Ground. Also! "A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF)." And the slices come via Pizza by Cer té – "Manhattan’s first green pizzeria."

Dave on 7th, who took these photos, wonders if the participants will be running by the folks waiting in line for a free meal this morning...

Anyway, if you don't like NYC Pizza Runs, then move to...

  4. These fucking imbeciles are out there running around on some post-adolescent shit, eating stacks of pizza right in front of the long line of poor, hungry people waiting for meals from the charity that's out there every weekend. Assholes.

  6. General rule to live by: if organizers are wearing flip flops, the event probably sucks.

  7. They're eating pizza and running. Flip flops are the least of their troubles.

  8. What percent of the proceeds go to the charity? Why aren't they up front? Sounds sketchy.

  9. To complete the sentence at the end of the post: If you don't like NYC Pizza Runs, then move to... Astoria! Where the the same group will be hosting the first annual NYC Cupcake Run this October! Where each entrant will receive a complimentary cupcake martini! No, seriously... http://nyccupcakerun.com. Please note that cupcakes are "approximately the size of your fist."

  10. So this has less to do with charity and more to do with LOOK AT ME!!!!!!

  11. I feel something like this belongs more on a college campus than in a densely populated neighborhood, with underprivileged folks lining up for food nearby. I don't begrudge people who decided to participate in the "run" (seems less idiotic than that awful tomato battle earlier this summer), but I just don't think it's the right setting.

Definitely something fishy about the statement that "a portion" of the proceeds will benefit charity.

  12. Shit- 9:33 reports a cupcake run coming up in Astoria- I guess next we need a froyo run, BYOHoof. NYC IS becoming a giant college campus and we are the "townies"

  13. i believe they make a $2,000 charitable donation, and as a participant the last few years, they bring 10 extra pies which are given to the homeless in the park which is a nice gesture.

  14. $2000 donation and 10 extra pies for the homeless, wow, or woooo! As 9:53 PM says, this has less to with charity and more to do with look at me, me, me. This pretending to be "charitable" is like selling indulgences; you pay the wealthy church for membership and relieve yourself of the burden of the sin.

  15. Also, there's no way to verify that 2K donation (anonymous claims on the Internet don't count), although the pies to the homeless could probably be corroborated by TSP regulars. I'll believe it when I hear it.

My questions is why some "green" (eyeroll) pizzeria from the Upper East Side is sponsoring a dumb run (oh I'm sorry, fun run) in TSP. Go huff and puff in flip-flops and barf sustainable pizza in your own hood, please.
