The Stuyvesant Stationery shop closes Monday after 23 years in business
As noted here a few weeks ago, the Stuyvesant Stationery shop on East 14th Street near Avenue A lost its lease... and they close for good after Monday (probably a good time to stock up on inexpensive wrapping paper, among other sidewalk-sale items) ... the store has been here for 23 years...

Ken from Ken's Kitchen pointed out that the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office sub-leased the space to the Stationary shop. The USPS will be moving out next spring.
Previously on EV Grieve:
UPDATED: Did you hear the rumor about the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office branch closing?
Report: Closure of the Peter Stuyvesant Post Office is pretty much a done deal
First sign of more development on East 14th Street?

Thanks for the reminder. Oh, and by the way, this is bad news for the neighborhood. But you already knew that.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. I grew up going here, and it's one of the last places left, and one of the only places with such an owner who made you feel like it was YOUR neighborhood - remembering you, asking how your family is...so sad, but wish him luck. What can you do...
ReplyDeleteAnother body blow. How many more can this poor, beleaguered neighborhood take?
ReplyDeleteTerrible news. Does anybody know if they're relocating anywhere?
ReplyDeleteJust chiming in as another person really sad about this. I'm gonna go in tonight and pick up some chocolates and a stuffed animal.
ReplyDeleteYou'll be missed, Stuyvesant Stationery. :(
@Anon. 1:21 - I asked Lee if he would be re-opening anywhere in the vicinity; he said no, he cannot afford Manhattan rents any more. I asked him what he would do next, he said he did not know.
ReplyDeleteWe will probably wind up with a new glass building with one of those sterile boutiques on street level, hawking crappy minimalist clothing for NYU brats.
I am sad to see this store go. I went there whenever I had to make copies or buy cards for birthdays, etc., and the people who worked there were always so nice. I wish them the best.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean that the dollar store will also close? Do they also sublease space from the post office?
Again, I asked Lee that; he told me only he and the PO had the same landlord, and everyone east of him to the corner had a different one. Not to say they won't also be shut down at some point and a new highrise built, but at this point, it seems to be just those two spaces.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gojira.
