ReplyDeleteHowever, these should be installed in the street, not in the sidewalks. The sidewalk area is already too narrow in much of downtown, and already cluttered with signs, parking meters, trash, trash cans, trash bags, newspaper boxes, mailboxes, etc.

ReplyDeleteAlso, did you see all the sidewalk cuts for new trees on Ave B north of the park? Half a dozen new ones by last evening. I wonder if these are for flood control more than shade. No trees yet, just holes in the ground...

ReplyDelete@Anonymous 12:08 -- Yes, what you wrote! I was wondering if anybody else recognized that bike parking, like bike lanes, belong in the street, not on the sidewalk. It's been "traditional" to put every new accessory on the sidewalks so as to not inconvenience motor vehicle traffic, but that means that pedestrian traffic gets pushed aside.
ReplyDeleteA few more on East 6th Street between A and B. Thank goodness! It's one of the hardest blocks to find bike parking.

ReplyDeleteI've noticed that it's mostly delivery people that park their bikes here. I'm not really sure as to the purpose. Also, the racks seem to be taking up parking spots. Personally, I would like to have seen more CitiBike stations.
ReplyDeleteIf these things had a diameter of, say, 12-14 inches, they could have been fastened to the tops of all the parking meter poles that the city has ripped out after removal of the meter heads. Presto! you'd have individual bike racks, spaced about every 15 feet along the sidewalks.
