Sandy on Avenue C
This video, uploaded just last week, was shot from East 11th Street at Avenue C one year ago tonight ... and it shows the Sandy storm surge headed down the Avenue ...
A series of images from that night and the next morning starts at the 3:30 mark.

I'm wondering if there are any bars or restaurants commemorating the storm with candlelight, no tvs, maybe unplugged guitar ... or is that crass, given how many suffered and how much was lost? Perhaps the anniversary is an opportunity to support small business that were effected?

ReplyDeleteI was awoken early this morning from a nightmare that the water surge was creeping to my building and that I was looking out the window watching people wade in the water in the middle of the street.
I then see this video. Argh. Man, I feel so bad for everyone who had to live through it!!

I live around the Ave C and 4th St area and we were not flooded! When I walked up Ave C the next day I was shocked to see all the debris and the cars at strange angles.
ReplyDeleteI'm still thankful that (as far as I know and have heard and read) that the community didn't lose anybody. Given that electrocution was not an uncommon problem after Sandy, maybe the area losing power turned out to be a positive thing in some ways.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. This footage is part of an art project called "Sandy@C" which is on view at a new space, The Front, 526 E. 11th St. between A and B. A video projection installation by screaMachine. Running after dark every day till 11/02. Opening was last night, the anniversary of Sandy and drew a big crowd of neighbors, everyone relating their stories of that night. Kate Peila, who runs the space, is also recording those stories, so anyone can stop by and have their story documented.
