ReplyDeleteYes there was a time.. I remember DJing there in the backroom, lots of nice folks.
However, I remember that one organizer told me that BoA would get complaints from a tenant above. The sound-system wasn't even that loud and definitely lacked bass. The owner was trying to do his best to accommodate but this tenant was a real pain apparently.
the irony is 7-11 sells the same nutritionless corporate shit as the bodegas - its getting to be like a service area on the interstate EVERYWHERE you go, only without toilets that are useful.

BOA was originally a very quite, very romantic little bar. But that's WHO the patrons were.

How did they get around the stop work orders? Do they simply ignore them, do the work and then pay the fines? I don't understand how they got away with that. Did they rectify the air conditioning situation in the back?
ReplyDeleteI believe there is a large residential complex being built across from this 7-11 in the Mary Help Of Christians space? And another just west on B and 12th...When these units are populated, good luck trying to tell the new tenants how they should boycott 7-11 because the EV used to be a cool non-corporate neighborhood. The capital went into the 7-11 because the growth in population is clear on their SPREADSHEETS...Boycotting is awesome...Won't do a thing...

And the fines aren't even that big, and they don't follow the developer, ie he can get fined in 100 buildings and more permits are given to the same developer, as long as it's a different address.

when a landlord says that you are the only tenant that complained about the lack of heat or hot water, should you remain in the cold?
complaints and praises are subjective. it is not up to us to determine their worth.

ReplyDeleteI don't know how much difference it would make, but I might have some respect for 7-11 if the company addressed the community's concerned and had some outreach. It is also insulting to see a security guard in the store. I don't see any of the local bodegas stationing security by the front door.
ReplyDeleteMake posterboards with the images of the vents. There is visual clarity of an overriding of law, respect, a willful corruption of the laws of the city. Push for city officials to address the bullying disrespect of the citizens and city laws. We are a bigger franchise than 7-11. Use your franchise.

ReplyDeleteThe area is welcoming to students and finance types. They have no idea what it is about to be apart of a community, nor do they care. They aren't into music and art (for the most part).
The party is over and a new corporate culture has taken over. I value my friends of the EV and savor the awesome parts of my neighborhood.
Walking by other 7-11's in the city, I can't fathom how they will survive. All I see is a sparse convenient store with about 10% of the items found down the street at a bodega.

ReplyDeleteUnderstandably, last night the staff were not thrilled when we showed up to protest and hand out flyers, but we let the guard know we were not there to cause trouble for him or the staff inside. It was amicable and we went about handing out our flyers and talking to people passing by who could not believe there is now a 7-Eleven in the neighborhood. At one point two workers came out to bring us what we think were tacos(?) One was very friendly, the other not so much. We politely declined the food(?) and let them know we were not there to aggravate them, just hand out fliers. This is not a war against a few people selling junk food for a living, it's a war against 7-Eleven who are strategically flooding the city with stores to push out local business then scale back once the damage has been done.
There's absolutely no need for 7-Eleven at this location as you can see THREE BODEGAS from the store.

ReplyDeleteI have noticed with this 7-11 and others that there isn't a lot of stuff in the store. While a local bodega will have everything from milk to sugar to dish soap, 7-11 has a much more limited supply of stuff, and it's all junk food. How do they survive selling so little?
