Westside Market coming to the East Village

The new residential complex rising on Third Avenue and East 12th Street has its first retail client — a Westside Market NYC.

Here's the official news release from today:

Westside Market NYC, the family-owned and operated neighborhood food markets in New York City, has announced that it will be opening its latest location at the base of the new luxury rental building, 84 Third Avenue. Located in the East Village on the corner of East 12th Street, this marks the fifth Westside Market NYC, and the first for the brand to be located on the East Side of Manhattan.

Offering freshly-prepared foods, specialty products and catering, the two-level store will occupy 18,871 total square feet – 10,500 square feet at the ground level and the remaining space at the lower level. Noticing a gap in the market for food retailers in the area, representatives from 84 Third Avenue felt that adding Westside Market NYC to the building would help further elevate the offerings at the nine-story, 90,000 square foot residential development and the neighborhood overall.

“Since the original Westside Market NYC was opened by my father, John, in 1965, we have worked diligently to provide the best supermarket experience to residents along the West Side of Manhattan,” said George Zoitas, CEO of Westside Market NYC. “After 48 years, four locations, and many people asking when Westside Market NYC would meet the East Side, we felt that the opportunity with 84 Third Avenue was the perfect introduction for our brand to the other side of Manhattan.”

Currently under construction, Westside Market NYC and 84 Third Avenue will be completed early next summer.

The space here was previously home to Nevada Smith's, Yummy House and a parking lot.

I'm familiar with the Westside Markets, though I've never shopped at one. Can anyone offer their opinion on them?

  2. Not a bad spot, it's similar to something like Gracefully, but larger.

  3. "Noticing a gap in the market for food retailers in the area,"

Apart from, you know, the Trader Joes a block and a half away, the Wholefoods 4 blocks away, the food emporium 3 blocks away, or the asian convenient store right across the street.

A veritable food desert, I tell you.

  4. I work right across from the Westside Market on 14th and 7th. They are a little overpriced, but their selection is insane (seriously, every square inch of space is used), and their bakery, cheeses, deli, prepared foods, salads, produce and sushi are all very good. It's extremely clean and people are helpful, yadda yadda, as an upper East Villager, I say it could be much worse.

They could up their vegetarian options though.

  8. There used to be a Pioneer on Ave A?? Where? Until when?

  9. I have been to the one over on 7th Avenue. It is pricey, and I don't think I can afford to be a regular shopper at this new store (unless I win the lottery). But they do have some good sandwiches and other quick bites if you are looking for lunch.

  11. Upper West Side's Westside Market is pretty good, not too pricey. Great produce, fresh, good selection. Great addition to the neighborhood, as Trader Joe's is limited in the produce area.

  12. I occasionally go to Westide markets on the UWS, and they're actually pretty good. They do have an insanely huge selection of..well, everything, from exotic staples, like arepa flour, to gourmet items. I go for their Cheeses and their deli counter. They get terrific gourmet cheese at really cheap prices, and the deli counters are well stocked and affordable.

  13. Unbelievable selection. Truly. Plus no store could ever be more expensive than Union Market.

  14. the WM on 6th & 15th-ish is near my work. it is FANTASTIC. i have long been hoping one would come to the 'hood. this is still a little far west for shopping-bag hauling back to the abode, but the food selection & prepared foods they carry is delightful. i wish it was on Av B. heck, i wish it was in my building, and we don't even have retail space!

  16. Well I for one am excited. I live across the street and really the only thing is the M2M (Asian Market). Yes there's a Trader Joe's but you can't get in there at night unless you're willing to wait an hour on line (I go at 8AM). There are a bunch of junk food restaurants but no prepared food places that you can grab and go. I'll be doing much of that.
