Reader mailbag: What was that rooftop concert about last night on East 13th Street?

We've heard now from a few readers who want to know:

Any intel on what that concert was last night around 11:30? I'm on 13th between A and B and it sounded like it was coming from everywhere. Louder than anything I typically hear from Tompkins Square.

Another resident said that it was a band playing atop a building on East 13th Street.

"Heard blaring music start at like 1130ish and on for easily 20-30 mins. I heard several other people from other buildings yelling shit at them but the band played on...

Not that it was all bad.

"Good music but I was super surprised the cops didn't show up...or if they did it took em a while."

Anyone know what this was all about?

  1. I live on 12th Street and heard it, too, and couldn't figure out where the hell it was coming from. I was so pissed because I needed to sleep so I could get up early for work.

  2. I live behind that building on 12th, I thought they were in the garden!! I'm glad the police showed up when they did, I was getting my hose ready! That would have been awkward.

  3. I heard it too, and watched the whole thing from my window. Super loud and a very crappy thing to do to the neighborhood. Somehow, they were able to play for a while, and miraculously, they did not wake my fiance up.

Curious how that went down. Also curious who they were, cause they were quite good!

  4. there was a band playing weekends on E13th btw 2nd and 3rd (north side), but didnt go much past sundown this summer. very loud. maybe the Jefferson developers asked them to move due east from the North West East Village.

  6. The band was "Black Jesuses". Westbrook bldg, I stopped by the office and told them how inconsiderate it was to allow this behavior. Earlier in the evening I would have been ok, but starting a set at 12?? On a roof? Most of us do not have the luxury of sleeping all day.

  8. At least it was a band, a rare band playing on a roof - these douchebags on 4th between A and B keep having rooftop parties, I'm going to go fuckin nuts. NYU types. PIssin me off. Already need to hear this annoying Dorian Gray bar who never have anyone controlling the losers outside.

  9. It was loud in a violating way, and way too late for it. I could see the lights flickering on the roof and assumed the music was coming from the same place but it took a while to figure it out because sound travels funny across the rooftops. Glad they didn't start playing again after the cops left. Can't believe nobody in the building went to the roof and unplugged them.

  10. Anonymous on 4th Street, I'm on the corner of 4th and A, and was wondering what was going on last night, they were almost as load as those bastards at 510 East 5th Street who throw huge garden parties with 100 people almost every weekend during the Summer, but it sounded like it was in a different place. Let me know the building address and I'll start calling it in.

  11. I live across the street and was one of the neighbors who called the police as soon as the music started and woke up my child. They came within 15-20 minutes of my call. Apparently another neighbor went up to ask them to shut it down just before the police arrived. The police told me they would contact the DOH to issue a violation to landlord because not only was it a noise issue, but a serious safety problem because retaining wall on roof is only a couple of feet on the side of the building that faces the garden. Who knows if this will actually happen but I was impressed at how quickly the police responded to a noise complaint in the EV on Halloween.

  12. @ Buzz Gluebag: We should join forces! I have the same problem with assholes on that block, except on the other (North) side of the street. They deserved to get egged at this point; nothing else has worked. Right now I really wish hail the size of baseballs would come down and hit those empty heads.
