Sushi Lounge has closed
Workers cleared out the Sushi Lounge space on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place yesterday afternoon... a manager told EVG regular @salim that the space was "too expensive."
No word on what might be next for this prime piece of East Village real estate. (Bring back Alcatraz?)

can't say I'm shocked, raw fish + happy hour = ?
ReplyDeleteDamn. Not the best sushi, but damn was it cheap. I wonder if the other location on St Marks near 2nd Ave is still open.
ReplyDeleteAw man. The sushi really sucked here but it was cheap and scratched the sushi itch decently enough, plus you could get a decent buzz going without breaking the bank. Never understood the 50% off all sushi promotion that never ended. I'll miss this place
ReplyDeleteI remember watching on the corner Adam Sandler shooting a scene from Reign over Me there in 2006 all the times I passed over years only went in once to eat weekend this summer lunch it wasn't bad and certainly not expensive the tacky yellow paint was like a beacon from across the park. Have no idea how long the place was there but it gave the feeling that it was a long time
ReplyDeleteI passed by last night and asked what was happening. They said they can't afford the rent ($27,000 per month!!!), and that their other locations would stay open. Those are Natori and Zen, also on St. Mark's. I'll miss this place. Not the best, but always reliable.
ReplyDeleteFunny how all the comments say they didn't have good food. Now.. if they DID have GREAT food, the place would be full at all times and they'd laugh at a mere 27K rent. No?
ReplyDeleteFinally!
ReplyDeleteHow did that place last that long??
At 27K a month... who/what could afford that rent? Starbucks, perhaps.
ReplyDeletePeople are celebrating the closing of this? This was good place to hang out and and pass time without breaking the bank. I remember when there were still struggling artists and students not funded by mommy and daddy go here to eat and do their homework. Food may not have been great but at least they didn't attract the pretentious douchebags and their sorority ladies.
ReplyDeleteI was just passing there the other day and was thinking how soon before the landlord and push them out since that's a prime location for another lux lounge cocktail bar née restaurant. And there you go. Enjoy.
The good news is there will be a lot more fish in the East River now.l.
ReplyDeleteLeshko's?

Okay, I am still shocked when I hear what businesses in our neighborhood are paying for rent...$27,000...that's insane. What type of business could afford to pay that much in rent?
ReplyDelete7-Eleven is paying $30,000 at 11th and Ave A
ReplyDeleteDiablo Royale space was going for $18,000 and it took forever to get a new tenant; not sure what they are paying.
I have a buddy on Ave A that is paying $8,000 and signed a 15 year lease during the big downturn a few years back and new landlord is trying to throw them out saying they are "under market." Any advice on how they can avoid that?
I'm not celebrating but I'm not mourning, either. The sushi was pretty fucking bad, and this is coming from someone with a pretty pedestrian palate.

ReplyDeleteIf they have a lease, they should be fine, but depends on the wording. They should have a real estate attorney look it over. I believe there are some free legal services for those sorts of things....anyone know if that is still the case?

Yes to bringing back Alcatraz. Those were the days! And now I feel older...
ReplyDeleteThe sushi was bad, but it worked for what it was... Well... That was a few years back. The size of the sushi started getting smaller, and smaller and last time I went there for the size of the portions vs $$ it was the same price as the more expensive places that give you more food...
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe so many people did not like the Sushi here. Although I mainly went for the incredible lamen and gyoza, I thought the sushi was really good, esp. for the price. I lived in Japan for 3 months, and have been to the best Japanese restaurants in NY. I was devastated when the Sushi Lounge closed, and will visit the (formerly Natori) Sushi lounge this weekend.
