Sad news to report for fans of T.G.I. Friday's Sesame Jack™ Chicken Strips, Jack Daniel's® Chicken & Shrimp, and Bacon Mac & Cheese Bites ... the national chain's Union Square location is for lease... the space has been on the market for several months, apparently... the rent is currently "negotiable."
Per the listing:
Retail/Restaurant space available at 34 Union Square East. Located on the Southeast corner of 16th Street. Frontage is 140 ft wraparound. Ground and second floors can be leased seperately. Can create ground floor entrance on 16th Street and combine with the second floor. Currently TGI Friday's.

The restaurant remains open for now. And this is just the latest T.G.I. Friday's to likely close in the city. The location on Eighth Avenue — one of like 23 TGIFs in Midtown — is expected to close early next year.
I'm in Union Square a fair amount but for some reason never around this particular block. I walked by last week thinking wow I totally forgot this horrid place existed. I wonder how it's doing?

Perhaps an IHOP will move in to keep that "suburban feel" of the new neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteOh noes, where am I gonna get a Parmesan Chicken Quesadilla appetizer and an Island Grilled Mahi Mahi fish entrée. Then again, that newly opened cocktail bar has this in its menu for triple the price by adding the words artisanal and organic in it. I still don't know why anyone would would travel to NYC/EV from their suburban homes and eat at TGIF where they have one in their strip mall. Oh, right, EV is now a suburban hell.
ReplyDeleteSo, a chain (Zen Palate) was pushed out by this TGIF chain. Thus, even if a chain can't afford the rent here, then who can. An ultra lux cocktail bar, that is. Or a bank.
As for TGIF's, once upon a time -- before TGIF became a suburban and chain hell, TGIF's was the place to go after work and a single scenes bar. The first TGIF opened in NYC in 1965 in the Upper East Side. That's where Tom Cruise shook and showed off his mixologist skills in Cocktails. Just saying. Now most bars in the EV are a singles scenes bar where the bros meet the sorority gals, or How Your Parents Met -- WOOOO, generation Z edition.

ReplyDeleteNo Zen was pushed out by Tim Horton, then TGIF. Horton was there but a while.

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Zen Palate, which I liked, there is still one on 9th Ave. and 46th St., and I think there is one downtown.
